Dear Friends:

October is nearly here – there’s a crispness in the air that tells us

Fall has arrived and Winter isn’t too far off.

I love this time of year! There’s a hearth and home sort of

anticipation in my heart. I can pull on an oversized sweater and

sink into a soft chair with a good book. I want to bake pumpkin

bread, attend a football game, and drink hot cocoa.

Of course, the best thing about Fall is the new TV schedule! We

have new seasons of old favorites and some strong new

contenders. And no doubt, there will be a few duds.

Fall is, also a great time to make a commitment to make daily

Bible reading a part of your life: as a devotional, as prayer time

or just quiet time to begin or end your day with God. There are

tons of resources online, one of the easiest to use is:

http://www.oneyearbibleonline.com.

A few printed resources are available in the Atrium if you’d like

to take something home with you. I encourage you to be in the

Word daily, so that the Word will be in you.

Denise

The Fellowship Committee invites you to a Potluck

Dinner following worship on October 17, 2010.

Personnel Committee

The Personnel Committee regretfully announces the

resignation of our Administrative Assistant, Connie

Boese. We are grateful to Connie for 6 1/2 years of

outstanding service and dedication to this church. We

wish Connie and Clayton all the best as they begin a new

chapter in their lives. The congregation is invited to a

farewell reception for them on Sunday, October 10 in

Fellowship Hall following worship.

Garage Sale Saturday, October 2nd 8:00a

It’s time again to start thinking of our annual ‘garage sale’

and all the things that you would like to donate. What a

wonderful way to clean out the stuff that has been piling

up in sheds, basements, garages. And what better way to

get rid of it!!!

Join Pastor Denise and others from southwest Kansas in

Dodge City on the afternoon of October 2 for a special food

packaging event with Numana - Share the Bounty. This

ministry involves packaging ingredients in an assembly

line. Volunteers measure the ingredients (beans, rice,

soy, multi-vitamin flakes, chicken flavoring) with scoops,

and fill and seal the bags as teams. The bags are packed

in cardboard boxes and put on pallets to ship across the

world. When the meals reach the hungry (using the

Salvation Army World Service Office), local water is

added to make the meal. This usually suffices as most

impurities are boiled away as the meals are

prepared. Volunteers of all ages are invited -- there are

even special assembly areas for those who cannot stand

for two hours on an assembly line. Denise says, "This is

very similar to the ministry I first encountered in Ohio,

called Kids Against Hunger. This is hands down the

most exhausting and invigorating mission work I've ever

done. I hope several of us can enjoy this ministry

opportunity together." For more information contact

THE PRESBYTERIAN

August 25, 2010

Greetings!

This months’ newsletter is FULL to the brim with exciting news:  the start of Y’all Come Wednesdays on Sept. 8th, Sunday School on the 12th, Celebration Worship on the 15th and the first session of the PSK Lay Academy on Reformed Worship on the 17th and 18th.  WOW!  We’ve got a lot packed into the first two weeks of September!  Pay close attention to the start times of these events because we’ve shifted a few of them this fall.

There are days when I have to remind myself that I’ve only been here two and a half months.  Time flies!  I continue to feel welcomed and embraced and I am grateful for the many ways you invite me to share your lives or enjoy the things that you enjoy!  Thanks also for making my friend Michele, my mom and her husband John feel so welcome at the Installation Service.  They were excited to meet my new church family.

One of my great pleasures has been getting to know our deacons.  As our Book of Order describes, “It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.”  Our congregation is blessed to be served by six wonderful, capable deacons who are eager to support, help and care for you in tangible and spiritual ways.  We don’t want

ANYONE to fall through the cracks!  The deacon for the month of September is Mary Eves, for October, Melanie Marcy, for November, Brenda Watson and for December, Carol Hodgkinson.  Our other current deacons are Rodney Wolfe and Sandra Neff.

The Nominating Committee is already meeting regularly to study scripture, to pray and to discern the qualities and qualifications of those whom God is calling to serve as your elders, deacons and in other positions of leadership.  One of the ways God calls leaders from the body is through nominations from the congregation.  Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find a form for your use in making nominations.  Please leave your nomination(s) in the box on the counter in the church office.  All nominations are held in the strictest confidence.  Your Nominating Committee members are: Cathaleen Cooper, Daryl Hamlett, Virginia Sowers, George Wharton, Darlene Mathias and Brenda Watson.

God bless you as you enjoy the final days of summer!

Denise

TUMBLEWEED WORSHIP

Sunday, August 29th will be our annual Tumbleweed Worship on the west lawn at Lee Richardson Zoo.

The Personnel Committee is once again seeking to fill the nursery attendant position.  The hours for this job would be from 9:15am to noon on Sundays and 6:00-8:30pm on Wednesdays with supper provided. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please ask them to pick up an

application at the church office.  Thank you.

NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sterling College Named “A Best in the Midwest

College by the Princeton Review

August 17, 2010, Sterling, Kansas—When high school seniors and their parents search the Princeton Review’s 2011 Best Colleges list, they will find Sterling College, Sterling, Kan., recommended as one of the “bests” in the Midwest region. These “regional bests” constitute only 25% of the

nation’s four-year colleges—“a select group, indeed.”

“We’re pleased to recommend Sterling College to users of our site as one of the best schools to earn their undergrad degree,” said Robert Franek, Princeton Review’s senior vice president/publishing. “We chose it and the other terrific institutions we name as ‘regional best’ colleges mainly for their excellent academic programs. From several hundred schools in each region, we winnowed our list based on institutional data we collected directly from the schools, our visits to schools over the years, and the opinions of our staff, plus college counselors and advisors whose recommendations we invite. We also take into account what students at the schools reported to us about their campus experiences on our 80-question student survey for this project. Only schools that permit us to independently survey their students are eligible to be considered for our regional ‘best’ lists.”

"Sterling College is aggressively pursuing academic excellence and staying true to its Christ-centered focus," said College President Dr. Paul J. Maurer. "It is gratifying to see our efforts paying off in recommendations such as this one from the Princeton Review. I truly believe that Sterling College is one of the best choices in the Midwest, especially for those students who desire an education of the whole person and instruction on the meaning of life."

The 152 colleges on the “Best in the Midwest” list are located in 12 states: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.”

The Princeton Review has been a pioneer and leader in helping students achieve their higher education goals for more than 28 years through college and graduate school test preparation and tutoring. With more than 165 print and digital publications and a free Web site, www.PrincetonReview.com, the Company provides students and their parents with the resources to research, apply to, prepare for, and learn how to pay for higher education.

Proverbs 2 says “Come to Sunday School”

Turn your ear to wisdom, apply your heart to understanding, call out for insight, cry aloud for understanding, look for wisdom as if

it were silver, search for it as if for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

A Message from Denise

Several of you have asked for a copy of this:

People are often unreasonable and self-centered.  Forgive them

anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives.  Be kind anyway.

If you are honest, people may cheat you.  Be honest anyway.

If you find happiness, people may be jealous.  Be happy anyway.

The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.  Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.  Give your best anyway.

For you see, in the end, it is between you and God.

It was never between you and them anyway.                         – Mother Teresa

Several weeks ago during a sermon, I shared these words of wisdom that I came across while I was at seminary.  They have stayed with me since and often come to mind when I’m feeling unappreciated, selfish or just downright annoyed.  I’m human.  I get tired.  I get frustrated.  Sometimes my mouth runs ahead of my brain.  That’s when I remember it’s not about me and them.  It’s about me and God.

These words also come to mind during the many times each day when I experience grace.  When someone goes out of their way to be kind to me, when someone has given their best, I am so grateful.  Sometimes it comes in the shape of a child’s fist holding a wilted dandelion and saying, “This is for you!”  Or some days I see grace in the toothless smile and weak handshake from a shut-in who’s getting their hot meal of the day.  God is everywhere, anxious to be seen and for us to see the world through his lens of grace.

What better prescription for life can there be than:  forgiveness, kindness, honesty, happiness, goodness, and integrity?  Mother Teresa said it well.

In Christ,

Denise

Sunday, July 11, 2010

Dear Friends,

The 219th General Assembly of the PCUSA has just concluded and was filled with joyous worship, challenging preaching, and heart filled prayers. Even in the midst of debate on difficult issues, the Assembly frequently stopped for prayer.  We were reminded to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Even though  the Assembly took actions that may cause great pain to some and joy to others, I would urge us all to take a deep breath and pray for the leading of the Holy Spirit as we hear about and discuss the actions being forwarded to the whole church. (A complete summary of the GA actions will follow later this week.)  These actions must be ratified by a majority of the Presbyteries before they are enacted.

Actions referred to the Presbytery were not the only things that happen at a GA. As I indicated, great times of worship also occurred.  There were also many other opportunities for challenge and reflection in the many meal time presentations. I was particularly challenged by two presentations by Phyllis Tickle who shared a thorough grasp of the major shifts in the life of God’s people throughout history.  It is seen by many that we may be in another time of great change.  Only time will tell. Maybe it was just the events I chose to go to, but it was clear to me that speaker after speaker reminded us of the need to focus on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as we face the changes within our world and respond in the church.

I encourage us to stay focused and to keep the main thing the main thing.  We are a people whose life is Jesus Christ.  He is the one whose love continues to transform our lives and sends us forth as servants.  As we consider all these things, let us be mindful of the word of God to the Colossians:

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  Colossians 3:15-17

In the Peace of Christ,

Donald Owens, General Presbyter

Hunger Barrel

The Mission and Outreach Committee are  collecting donations Sunday, July 18th for the Emmaus House.     There is a great need in our community and your generosity is greatly appreciated. Together, we can help ease the hunger in our community.

Tools for Schools

The Salvation Army would like to invite you to join the Tools for Schools Program, making sure that all students go to school with the tools needed to be successful. The Salvation Army distributed over 800 backpacks to children in grades Kindergarten to high school in the Garden City area.

When it comes to writing essentials, teachers say, don’t waste your money on feather pencils, light-up pencil sharpeners, or pretty erasers that don’t work. And for organizational helpers, keep in mind that expensive folders with multiple pockets and zippers are often too bulky to fit into desks.

Supplies needed to fill backpacks:

Glue sticks (at least three for the year)

Scissors (blunt ended for younger kids, pointed for older ones)

Ball point pens

No. 2 pencils (stick with this classic to avoid classroom competition over whose writing utensil is the coolest.)

Colored pencils

Water paints for elementary students

Pencil sharpener (hand-held with a top to collect shavings)

Large pink eraser (the old-fashioned ones work the best)

Water-based markers

Four-ounce bottle of white glue

Highlighters (are probably unnecessary for kids in kindergarten through second grade)

Spiral-bound or composition notebooks

Three-ring binder

Loose-leaf notebook paper (Teachers can be picky about paper. Schools usually supply specially ruled handwriting paper to help younger children with letter formation. Older children use wide-ruled paper, and some middle-school students will need the college-ruled variety)

Pocket folders (if you get a folder with two pockets, label one “keep at home” and the other “bring to school” to help your child organize his papers)

Ruler with English and metric measurements

Sturdy, supportive backpack.

Mission and Outreach have a box set-up

in the Atrium for donations.

Thoughts from Denise

Look around you: Everything you see is God's—the heavens above and beyond, the Earth, and everything on it.  But it was your ancestors who God fell in love with; he picked their children—that's you!—out of all the other peoples.  That's where we are right now.  So cut away the thick calluses from your heart and stop being so willfully hardheaded.  God, your God, is the God of all gods, he's the Master of all masters, a God immense and powerful and awesome.  He doesn't play favorites, takes no bribes, makes sure orphans and widows are treated fairly, takes loving care of foreigners by seeing that they get food and clothing.

You must treat foreigners with the same loving care—

remember, you were once foreigners in Egypt.

Reverently respect God, your God, serve him, hold tight to him,

back up your promises with the authority of his name.

He's your praise!  He's your God!

He did all these tremendous, these staggering things

that you saw with your own eyes.

                                                      Deuteronomy 10:14-21, The Message

Within just a few short weeks, your hospitality has made me feel welcomed and cared for.  It’s not easy settling into a new community, finding your way around town, meeting new people every day – and I am thankful for all the fellowship and support you’ve given.  During the next few months, I look forward to getting to know each of you and your families and I hope you will invite me to share a cup of coffee at your home or a meal at your favorite restaurant.  I also plan to do some small group interactions in the fall to hear more about where you sense the leading of the Holy Spirit and what God has placed on your heart as hopes and dreams for this congregation.  Hospitality is a big part of what God has called us to do and be.

In a world that has grown frighteningly wary and uncaring, Christians are called to imitate the “table manners” of Jesus by being instruments of God’s hospitality in the world.  This isn’t easy because the hospitality of God is nothing like the hospitality of Martha Stewart.  Our God is a God who loved us while we were still sinners.  Our God took flesh in the hospitality of Jesus, whose love knew no bounds.

Christian hospitality is a matter of welcoming, caring for, and befriending the stranger, the poor and needy, the homeless and destitute, the unloved and the unlikable, the weird and the strange – because we are grateful to God for doing that for us and we seek to be imitators of Christ.  It may be the most important Christian calling for our times, but it is one we easily neglect unless we are part of faith communities who make it a priority.  For Christians, hospitality is not an occasional token action but a whole way of being.  Hospitality isn’t an interruption to our “normal way of life” but part of our DNA.  It’s a habit, practice, or virtue that consistently characterizes our lives.

My prayer for this congregation is that the hospitality you have shown me is what we will be known for when people speak of “those people at Texas and Henderson”.  We will see ourselves in all aspects of our mission as a fellowship of charity, a community of the friends of God

We need a lot more communities like that today if we’re not going to be defeated by the modern culture of fear.  We have a different calling.  We are communities formed in the charity and hospitality of God.  We don’t see the strangers of this world as threats to overcome, but as guests to welcome, just as God always welcomes us.

And speaking of weird and strange, most of you know that I’m a vegetarian.  It’s not quite as bizarre as it sounds – I eat fish and eggs along with lots of pasta, veggies, tofu, fruit and of course, chocolate!  Why did I give up meat?  Well, two factors played into the decision.  In June 2008, my vegetarian daughter was graduating from high school and I didn’t have the money to do a big splashy gift, so her brother and I gave her “becoming vegetarians” for her graduation gift.  That same summer also saw food prices sky rocketing across the globe for staples such as rice, corn and wheat.  Bags of rice were rationed in such far away places as – New York City and Los Angeles!  In other places like Haiti, there were days when no food was available and women made cookies from dirt to feed their children.  So, if making different food choices might have an impact on a hungry child in Haiti or Uganda or even Kansas, I’m willing to make that change.  This was also the summer I got involved with a food-packaging program called “Kids Against Hunger.”  Let me direct you to their website in Ohio that explains the program in detail:  www.achildshopeintl.org/KidsAgainstHunger.html.

Thank you for welcoming this stranger – and the many strangers God  sends your way each day!  Denise

CE Happenings:

Our Pre-schoolers joined in the SonQuest Rainforest VBS Adventure held at Trinity Lutheran June 14-18.  Children attending were Carl VI and Henry Bors, Jessa and Annalise York and their cousin Jareht, and adults Linda Kern and Mary Buchele.  It was an exciting week of learning about Jesus and five parables.

Middle/High School Paintin’ & Fixin’ Service Project

Amy McVey and Mary Lynn and Mary Buchele worked with the youth of Trinity Lutheran in a service project in Garden City, scraping and painting the outside and inside of the Girl Scout House in Garden City.  What a huge difference the group made!  Thanks to Ann & Brynn Hamlett and Yvonne Battles for serving lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Several from Garden City attended Westminster Woods camps this month: Jacob and Jonathan Ochampaugh, Zack McVey, Mary Lynn Buchele,  Leslie Ford, Steven Buchele and Gary Harley.  Adults who went as kitchen volunteers were Kathryn Ochampaugh and Brynn Hamlett, and  Lucas Whippo was part of camp staff again this year.

Be sure to ask them about “Crazy Love” (camp theme).

Why??

Because God wants us to –

We will tell the next generation…Psalms 78,

Train a child… Proverbs 22,

Therefore go and make disciples...teaching them…

                                                                                       Matthew 28.

And because we have told God we would -

Whenever we baptize a child in our church we promise before God to nurture him or her.

What??

Say  “Yes, Lord” and be a teacher or sponsor.

Supplies needed to fill backpacks:

q       Glue sticks (at least three for the year)

q       Scissors (blunt ended for younger kids, pointed for older ones)

q       Ball point pens

q       No. 2 pencils (stick with this classic to avoid classroom competition over whose writing utensil is the coolest.)

q       Colored pencils

q       Water paints for elementary students

q       Pencil sharpener (hand-held with a top to collect shavings)

q       Large pink eraser (the old-fashioned ones work the best)

q       Water-based markers

q       Four-ounce bottle of white glue

q       Highlighters (are probably unnecessary for kids in kindergarten through second grade)

q       Spiral-bound or composition notebooks

q       Three-ring binder

q       Loose-leaf notebook paper (Teachers can be picky about paper. Schools usually supply specially ruled handwriting paper to help younger children with letter formation. Older children use wide-ruled paper, and some middle-school students will need the college-ruled variety)

q       Pocket folders (if you get a folder with two pockets, label one “keep at home” and the other “bring to school” to help your child organize his papers)

q       Ruler with English and metric measurements

q       Sturdy, supportive backpack.

Mission and Outreach will have a box set-up in the Atrium for donations.

Speaking of VBS and Fun…

here are some highlights from the VBS Weekender:

-started with a splash at our Pool Party and Dive-In Movie

-“Dave and the Giant Pickle”, a Veggie Tales Classic

-slinging wet socks at Goliath (Kevin Ochampaugh)

-Because of his sin, David had many obstacles and challenges in his life, so we had obstacle courses in the pool and the Atrium.

-portions of the movie “David” showing Samuel anointing God’s chosen one, and Nathan the Prophet counseling King David

-ended with eating our pizza maps (Just try making maps of Old Testament Israel with pizza toppings!).

The movies are available for you to check out and watch at home. Please see Mary to check them out.  (Note:  “David” has some violence, also brief nudity & suggested sexuality.)

Our Youth need YOU

We are already planning our youth program and Sunday School for the fall and we are looking for adult and parent help.  Youth Ministry is a great place for ANYONE to serve the Church.  It is extremely rewarding, fun and a place where the entire church should be involved.  There’s no such thing as too old, boring, or un-cool!!  Youth are very receptive to adults who enjoy sharing their lives with others!  See any of the CE members (Rodney York, Chip Marcy, Becky McVey, Pat Sanders, Steven Buchele), or sign up on the board in the Atrium .

Welcome

We would like to welcome Pastor Denise Pass to our church and to our community with a housewarming.  Would you like to donate something you would like for her to have.  Something that you love or couldn’t live without, or wished you had when you last moved.

Our thoughts are to try to fill her refrigerator, keeping in mind that Pastor Pass is a vegetarian, and cupboards with some staples: fresh fruit; paper goods (paper towels, Kleenex, toilet paper, aluminum foil, baggies, plastic wrap); canned goods; cleaning supplies (dish soap/dish washer detergent, Lysol wipes, pledge)  etc.

Another idea would be to put together a theme basket:

Laundry basket filled with supplies or filled with a variety of dish towels, hand towels, pot holders etc.

Kitchen basket filled with muffins, mixes, tea, coffee, water bottles, salt, pepper, or other spices.

Perhaps you would like to offer a gift card to one of the many businesses around town.

All ideas are great and welcome.

If you would prefer to do a cash donation, we will apply any money received towards a gift certificate from Dillon’s, Target or Wal-mart.

Your contributions can be dropped off at the church or please call Kathy Irvin at 275-7501; Brenda Reeve at 275-9506 or Janet Major at 275-4878 and they will be glad to come and pick them up.

All donations will be delivered to Pastor Pass on Sunday, June 13 following our worship service.

Why Are Fire Trucks Red?

Fire trucks have four wheels and eight firefighters, and four plus eight equals twelve. There are twelve inches in a foot. A foot is a ruler. Queen Elizabeth is a ruler, and the Queen Elizabeth is one of the largest ships on the seven seas. Seas have fish. Fish have fins. The Finns fought the Russians. The Russians are red. Fire trucks are always rushin’. Therefore, fire trucks are red.

If you think this is wild, you ought to hear some people trying to explain why they are not attending church on Sunday morning!!!

Summer’s Here!

Enjoy your children – whatever age or stage they are in!  Encourage them in their faith journey, and in doing so your own journey will be enriched and blessed.  Ask them questions about the video and internet games they play, the movies and TV shows they watch, the books they read.

Here’s a couple of books I’ve enjoyed :

-Real Kids, Real Faith:  Practices for Nurturing Children’s

Spiritual Lives by Karen Marie Yust

-Growing Compassionate Kids: Helping Kids See Beyond Their Backyard by Jan Johnson

-Our Family’s Favorite Grace published by Reiman

Vacations and road trips can bring opportunities to talk about faith.  Take a break from the individual video games and CD/DVD players to:

-Watch the road signs and choose one that best represents something about God’s love.

-Describe someone you came in contact with who showed kindness.  Discuss how a person’s kindness can reflect Jesus.

-Describe your favorite sighting of God’s creation for the day.

-Describe the best item of food you ate today, and talk about how God provides for all of your needs, even when you’re far from home.

-Listen to a worship CD on your drive today, and talk about ways to worship God outside of church.

One of my favorite Spanish phrases is “Que se vaya con Dios” – that God go with you.  That’s my hope for you this summer!

Example of a Good Welcome to a Church Visitor

I visited a church that I hadn’t been to in a while.  It was packed full of people, many of whom I had never seen before during prior visits. To many people that morning, I was a first time church visitor. When the service was over, I was speaking to a church member, whom I knew.  He is a personal friend of mine.

Interrupted

While we spoke, a young couple with a small child graciously interrupted our conversation so that they could conduct some matter of business with my friend.  I found myself thinking, “How rude?”

They

*       sheepishly smiled,

*       asked permission to talk with my friend,

*       finished their conversation in about 2-3 minutes.

*       started walking away.

My friend then said  Have either of you met my friend Chris?  He’s visiting with us today.

Relief

My friend had a deep value of making the visitor feel welcome and included.  He took the initiative to introduce me to his friends.

In so doing, he resolved the awkwardness his friends had created by excluding me.  Maybe my friend was simply being polite, but his action is a good one.

Take away

1.  How can you cultivate this awareness of visitors in your hospitality team volunteers?

2.  What keeps you from taking the initiative to greet an unknown person?

Congregational Meeting Sunday, May 23, 2010

We ask that all members of the church attend the congregational meeting following worship on Sunday, May 23, 2010.

The purpose of the meeting is to vote on the call of Reverend Denise Pass for the position of Solo Pastor at the Presbyterian Church of Garden City, Kansas and to vote on the terms of call for said position.  Rev. Pass will conduct the worship services that morning, including preaching and the serving of communion.  Please plan to attend this very important meeting since a quorum is essential for any vote to occur.

YOU ARE INVITED

The Tribune  and Leoti churches are hosting a retirement party for Charles Ayers.  It will be on Sunday, May 23, beginning at 5 p.m.  It will be at the Leoti Presbyterian Church 504 W Broadway.  It will be a potluck, but anyone coming from the Garden City church will be our guests.  We just need to know about how many people might be coming up from the Garden City church.  There will be a free will offering taken up to purchase a gift for Charlie.

Adult Opportunity May 16 & 23

Putting our faith to work in the face of moral & ethical dilemmas

Chip Marcy will lead an adult discussion group May 16th & 23rd entitled; “Putting our faith to work in the face of moral & ethical dilemmas".  Discussion on May 16th will center on the moral & ethical dilemmas Presbyterians face with same sex marriage.  Discussion on May 23rd will center on the moral & ethical dilemmas faced in

business and the financial markets.

The Presbyterian Church’s 219th General Assembly that meets this coming July will receive a report from the “Special Committee on Civil Union and Christian

Marriage.  Before us is the issue that our Book of Order defines marriage as between a man and a woman.  However, 5 states now recognize same sex marriages.  So how do we apply and understand our faith in the face of a dilemma such as this?  Background information is available through http://www.PCUSA.org  and a

summary of the committees work can be accessed through

http://www.pres-outlook.com/news-and-analysis/1-news-a-analysis/9601-committee-recommends-steps-toward-traditional-marriage-and-same-gender-ceremonies.html .

The housing bubble, financial meltdown of September 2008 and the recession has brought to the forefront many of the moral and legal issues business leaders must deal with.  For example Goldman Sachs has recently been accused of defrauding investors, yet on paper it doesn’t appear that there was anything illegal about what they did.  As we work for our employer, how do we put our faith and Christian values to work in the face of a dilemma such as this?  The following link will provide some additional information on the Goldman Sachs situation.  http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2920142 .

Excerpts from letters from Ellen and Al Smith,

PC(USA) missionaries to Russia who will be with us October 3:

When the metro bombings [in Moscow] took place, we were safely in London . . . The second metro station is very close to our home and I am often in it, but not usually at that time of day. . .  As I rode into the center today, I did notice more security in all the stations and a large pile of flowers in the Park Kultury station, where the second bomb went off. The grief is still fresh, but things should be calm for a while. . .

In Russia, we are still very much in the season of Easter.  Up to Pentecost, we will greet one another with “Христос Воскрес!” Christ is risen! This year, the Western and Eastern churches celebrated together. This only happens about every three years. I hope, as you gathered on Easter morning, you were  aware that your brothers and sisters in Christ on the far side of the globe celebrated with you.    [to see mission letters in their entirety, go to www.pcusa/missionconnections]

A Challenge from our Christian Ed. Director:

May has 31 days and the book of Proverbs has 31 chapters.

Read one chapter a day, and each day choose one verse to email to Mary @  mrbuchele@hotmail.com .  She’ll reply with her daily favorite!  Or you can keep a list & leave it for her at church.

An on-line Bible resource is www.biblegateway.org where you can read a passage or chapter in a variety of translations.  Try it with Proverbs in May!  Mary will post favorite verses from Proverbs in the hallway by the west doors.

The projects in Uganda include clean water well projects, feeding projects, clothing projects, teacher training, pastor training, VBS-style programs for children, and medical/dental clinics. KayeLani will be traveling ahead of the rest of the team and doing preparatory work. The McVeys and Abbey will be most directly involved in the medical/dental clinics. They will all be participating in some training and ministry activities as well.
