Help Wanted!!!

Each spring we seem to have a list of items that require our attention around the church, replace lights, clean gutters, etc. This year we have scheduled a work day for April 12 beginning at 8:00 am.

If you have some spare time please stop by the church to help out. Thank you.

Cleaning up the Church

The Women’s Association will be doing some ‘Spring Cleaning’ on April 8 as well. If you have left dishes or pans in the kitchen, coats, jackets, or sweaters in the Atrium coat closet, they need to be picked up.

Items that have not been claimed will be placed in the Rummage Sale.

Presbyterian Women

Annual Spring Rummage Sale

Spring is in the air and once again we start to think about

the Presbyterian Women’s Spring Rummage Sale.

This year’s Rummage Sale will be held on

Thursday, April 24th and Friday, April 25th.

You may start to bring in your donated items on Sunday, April 20th.

Volunteers are needed to help set up for the sale following the congregational dinner.

Across the Pastor’s Desk

Several of you have asked how we go about choosing hymns and music for our services. As you know, this congregation is blessed with a broad variety of musicians and musical talents.  A good quality musical department is an asset to any congregation.  This congregation has much to be grateful for in the quality of our choir and its leadership under Kevin.  Linda prepares quality music for the bell choir, the preludes, and offertories, not to mention playing for our hymns and anthems.  Additionally we have the ongregational band which provides music from time to time. We especially appreciate having other members of our congregation who are willing and able to play the piano, flute, drums, and other instruments. All of this contributes to a varied program of music and praise. Needless to say we are grateful for the training our children receive from Pat.

The hymns are chosen according to the season of the year.  The basic reference point for all hymns and anthems is the Scriptures for that occasion, whether that is the lectionary suggestion or ones that we develop for particular services.  This is as it should be.  The Scripture readings are the heart of the Reformed service.  From these readings are the reference point for the prayers as well. Thus the Scripture readings determine all other parts of the service as well, and not simply the sermon.  Within the service the three hymns also serve particular purposes in addition to conveying the theme of the season.

Though ultimately all of the music sung in any particular service is the responsibility of whoever is pastor, our Music Director works directly with the choir to develop anthems and responses that particularly suit the mood of each service.  In addition, Kevin and the choir make recommendations about particular hymns and, especially, hymn tunes.  I consider myself fortunate to get feedback from Kevin, Linda, and the choir. We are attempting to integrate classical, folk, traditional, and contemporary tunes and hymns into each of our services.

Since the bulk of hymn selection falls to me, I would personally appreciate each of you taking a few minutes and jotting down the hymns in our current hymnal that you particularly like.  Obviously I cannot guarantee that any particular suggestion will be immediately used, but over a period of time they all will be included.  Please jot down your suggestions on a slip of paper and place it in an offering plate, Or address me a brief note or give them verbally to Connie.

I hope that each of you make a point to tell Kevin, Linda, Pat, and the choir when you find a prelude, an anthem, or a musical selection particularly moving or helpful.  While no one  who takes a part in the morning service needs personal adulation, it is always appropriate and supportive to express appreciation on particular occasions.

I hope that if any of you have other or further questions, you will let me know so that these articles might become even more timely and useful.  While often there are natural emphases for these weekly and bi-monthly articles, at other times the “well runs dry”.  Your questions and/or concerns would be greatly appreciated.

                                                                        Jim

Come  to Worship and Potluck on Wednesday, April 16

Amanda McVey would like to organize the Wednesday worship serve and Family Potluck for her Buff Project on April 16, 2008. The theme of the worship service will be India, and Amanda will hand out Indian recipes the Sunday before, April 13, 2008. Amanda chose India as the theme because she has a big heart or it ever since she read a series about the untouchables a couple of years ago. The  service will include a power-point presentation that will educate everyone about the untouchables and what they go through on a daily basis. Later in the service, Amanda will ask for a free-will donation for Lian and Clara Tombing. Lian and Clara run an orphanage and school in India for needy

children, mostly untouchable children. If you want more information about Lian and Clara Tombing, you can go to their website at: www.covenantseminary.edu

Don’t Miss It!!!

Ole’ Fashioned Fried Chicken Dinner following Worship on Sunday, April 20. Chicken provided by the Fellowship Committee with the congregation invited to bring side dishes or dessert. Then join the old favorites music sing-along

accompanied by Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Hodges on the piano.  We’ll be adding “DIXIE” to the song fest this year in honor of Pastor Pitts.

Tables of 8

The Lay Ministry committee would like to invite you to join in a fun opportunity to fellowship and get to know some of your fellow church members better. Groups of eight people meet on a mutually agreed-upon time and frequency to simply share a meal and friendly conversation. It’s a wonderful chance to form new friendships and strengthen old ones and make our church a warmer place to be. If you are interested, there will be a table to sign up for a Table of 8 in the atrium following worship.

Hunger Barrel

Sunday, April 20, the Lay Ministry committee will be taking donations for their Hunger Barrel to benefit the Emmaus House. There is a great need in our community and your generosity is greatly appreciated. Together, we can help ease the hunger in our community.

A Message from Monty Fey

(as printed in the ‘Pacesetter’ Newsletter of the

Presbyterian Church in Lyons, KS)

Dear Friends;

I have been so blessed with your caring and the many expressions of your concern. I do thank you for the cards, the flowers and the telephone calls. They mean so much to me.

I find myself in a difficult situation at this time. I hear that you adjusted quite well to my disappearance during Holy Week. Maybe you’ve heard that “life is what happens when you’ve made other plans.” We had plans and they went every which way.

I’ve had one surgery, and am awaiting another. The first one went quite well and I have no idea what the later one will reveal. Most of you know that I’m dealing with a malignant mass on my bladder, a transitional cell carcinoma. My second surgery will be for the removal of my bladder and prostate, lymph nodes and other parts affected and just look around. This will necessitate considerable recovery time. Bear with me. Please keep Bonnie and me in your prayers. We so need them now.

Grace and Peace to you!

Monty

From the Presbytery Office Monday - April 7

Monty had his surgery and everything went well.

He is recuperating at Wesley Hospital, but is expected  to be released by mid-week.
