As faithful members of the Presbyterian
Church
of Garden City,
Our mission is a twofold responsibility; to
nurture and support our local church; and to follow Christ’s call to serve in
the world, thereby proclaiming the Gospel to all.
Annual Meeting
This year our annual meeting and Congregational dinner will be held on January
20th following worship. The Fellowship committee will be providing the
Roast Beef, rolls and the drinks and asks that members of the congregation
bring a vegetable or salad and a dessert to share. Please plan on attending
this important meeting.
Across the Pastor’s Desk
I want each of you to know how pleased I am to be your Interim
Pastor. I had been in conversation with several other congregations. There seemed to me to be more of a “fit”
with your congregation which I noted from the first contact. In this context I
experienced not only a new job possibility, but also a sense of being called
here for an important temporary
position.
I believe that this congregation has a continuing vital role to
play in this region, representing not only what we stand for locally, but as
representing the national and world-wide Reformed and Presbyterian tradition in
this area.
I have been impressed by the healthy atmosphere within the
congregation that is the legacy of your past pastors. I hope that we can work
together in ways that will both perpetuate and expand that legacy. This does
not mean standing pat, but on that legacy, as the Spirit leads us. Be assured:
God as Holy Spirit is working “behind the scenes” through our hearts and within
the larger community. It will be exciting for all of us to discover the details
of our future.
My first task is to get to know as many of you as I can. Already this is happening through the many
committee meetings and informal contacts that occur daily. Next week I will
pick up on home visits to those who are largely homebound. Obviously any
unexpected hospitalizations or sicknesses will receive a “first priority”. Please let Connie or me know about
these. Also, if any one wants a
pastoral visit or to see me in the office, please schedule this through Connie.
One thing I want to ask each of you to consider is that of regularly
inviting friends and acquaintances to our varied activities. Nationwide this is a Presbyterian
blindspot. No congregation in our
current situation can ignore this type of outreach and remain healthy for long.
We are in a very different church situation then we grew up in. In this respect
Presbyterians will have to learn “new tricks” or die. While we don’t want to
“steal sheep” from other congregations; we do aim to be a supportive and caring
community for any and all persons who
have no current church home.
I look forward to working with each of you during these next
months.

Family worship with
potluck dinner
Wednesday, January 16, the Praise Team is
providing a contemporary
family worship
experience with a potluck dinner at 6:00 p.m.
This is
meant for families, couples, singles or
whomever. We hope you can join us for this time of fellowship and
worship of our Lord.
Hunger Barrel
The Lay Ministry committee will be having their
first
collection
of the year this Sunday, January 13th to benefit the Emmaus House. Let's start
the year out with a bang. The need in our
community
is so great that your help is really
needed. Also, Souper Bowl
Sunday,
which this year is February 3rd, will be coming
up
shortly.
Ordination and Installation
During
worship on January 20th the newly elected Elders and Deacons for the Class of
2010 as well as the Deacon for 2009 filling the position vacated this past
year, will be ordained and installed.
Attention Youth and Parents:
Exciting things
are happening with our Youth Groups.
Prime Time Presbies and the High School groups will be using several
video-based Bible studies (& fun stuff!).
Celebrate Kids will be mixing some other activities in with the Veggie
Tales videos and lessons. Invite a
classmate to come with you!
Mark your calendars for these great ways to
have fun with other Presbyterian and Christian youth, and grow with God.

Sleepless in
Attention Adults Who Care about our Youth:
Two of our Youth Group sponsors are leaving – Anna McVey is returning to
school at K-State, and Wally Hamann is taking a new job in
It is a great
time to try out being a sponsor, as our topics and activities have been
scheduled through February and also some further out. Our youth need caring adults to nurture them in their faith
journey. Please pray that adults,
including at least one man, feels called to this opportunity.
If you feel
God calling you, don’t lie down, waiting for the feeling to go away. Get on the phone and call Mary because she
is expecting an answer to prayer! The
benefits are eternal!
