THE PRESBYTERIAN
Mission
Statement
As
faithful members of the Presbyterian Church
of Garden City,
Kansas, we accept God’s call to be involved in the ministry of God’s church.
Our mission is a twofold responsibility; to nurture
and support our local church;
and to follow Christ’s call to serve in the world, thereby proclaiming the Gospel to all.
Interim Search Committee
The
Interim Search Committee is progressing in their search for an Interim Pastor.
The Committee has met with a prospective candidate who has expressed
interest this position.
The Committee will continue to follow up with this candidate as well as one or two more.
Stewardship Campaign
Once again we find ourselves planning our
budget for 2008. The Stewardship Committee in conjunction with the Fellowship
Committee will be hosting a congregational dinner on November 4th following worship. Enclosed is
your 2008 pledge card, please prayfully consider your commitment for this coming year
and place your pledge card in the collection plate during worship or to the
church office. We commend the Stewardship Committee for accepting the responsibilities
of working with the gifts we receive to stay within our projected budget.
Congregational
Dinner
The Fellowship and Stewardship Committees will be
hosting a dinner on November 4th following worship.
A yummy meal is planned
including succulent pork loin, various potato dishes,
green bean casseroles (compliments of the
Presbyterian Women),
homemade applesauce and
butter-horn dinner rolls, plus
desserts.
The
Stewardship Committee has planned our third annual Garage Sale.
Saturday, October 27th
from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.
What a great way to clean out those
unwanted items that are being stored in basements or garages, at the same time
helping to continue our mission here in our church, our community and around
the world.
Please consider donating the things cluttering your garage
or basement. Old sporting equipment, yard equipment, useable furniture, even
those ‘I may need this someday’ items that have been around for years.
Nothing
to donate? Come by the garage sale, we might have one of those treasures you
have been looking for.
We will be selling the old
round tables, which are in very good condition, for a price of $100.00 each.

Operation Christmas Child
Our church will be involved in two ways this year:
1. For the first time, we
will be taking a group to
the processing center near Denver December 7-8th, to help prepare
shoebox gifts for shipment overseas.
The confirmation class will be offered the first opportunity to go, but
there may be a few open slots for this trip, for 8 youth (age 13 or over) and 2
adults. If you are
interested in going please let Mary
know.
2. If you are interested in
helping us fill shoeboxes, Celebrate Kids! our youth group for 1-4th grades, will be
assembling shoeboxes on November 7th, with school supplies,
small toys, hygiene items; no liquids, soft candy, or used or war related
items. Gift ideas and other info can be
found on our bulletin board, or www.samaritanspurse.org. (If you would like to wrap and pack your
own shoebox, please bring them to church by Nov. 11, or deliver them to the
Family Bookhouse by Nov. 19.)

the Thanksgiving holidays approach, let’s not forget about our college students
who are facing final week! During the week before Thanksgiving, the Outreach
and Evangelism Committee will be assembling 20 snack bags to fortify our
hard-working students. Please have the goodies you would like to add to the
bags in the Church office by November

Some suggestions are: microwave
popcorn, nuts, crackers, candies, hot chocolate, coffee mixes.

families as well as some of the elderly. If you are able to help, we would be

Parish
Nursing Notes
I am pleased to announce I will be
leading a series of two adult Sunday school classes in November. On November 4 the subject
will be care giving. We will cover the
general aspects of care giving as well as discussing problems to particular
groups of caregivers such as those caring for the elderly,
special needs children and adults, and caring for those with cancer. On November 11th it will be people’s choice
for the subject matter. Those attending
the November 4 class will choose whether to continue discussing care giving or
to choose from subjects such as “Pandemics:
Influenza and Bird Flu” or “What the Bible Says about Healing.”
As the Parish Nurse I must be invited to visit a person with health problems,
instead of just contacting that person myself.
A pastor who is aware of what the parish nurse’s role is can ask someone
if they would like the parish nurse to be notified. Deacons and other people in the congregation can do this as
well. I am willing to serve this
congregation by taking phone calls at home, setting up an appointment in the
parish nurse office or making a home visits.
My home phone number is 276-6718.
If one of my family members answers just explain you are from church and
would like to call right back and leave a message. My voice mail at home is confidential and I am the only one who
has the password. I am usually able to
return calls within 24 hours.
We hydrate our skin with lotion and our hair
with conditioners, but are we hydrating our bodies by drinking enough water? Virtually every system in the body works
better with adequate hydration. Many of
us have lost the natural symptom of thirst by ignoring it. I would like to encourage all of you to
consider whether you are drinking enough water, and if you aren’t try to make
it a concourse decision to work on drinking more for three consecutive days and
see if your natural thirst comes back.
Sometimes we get distracted or busy and ignore the built in sensor God
has provided us with.
Let’s use Halloween night to let Christ’s
light shine.
All Hallows’ Day, (All Saints’ Day) November 1st
was a day set aside by the church in the 700’s to remember the individuals who
had suffered and died for the love of their Savior, Jesus Christ. The date was selected to counteract a much
older Celtic and Druid festival on that date. The night before, All Hallows’
Eve or Halloween, was set aside to prepare. Since that time, many cultures have
influenced our current Halloween customs.
Wondering about Halloween and how it fits in with God?
Lots of people
wonder, and there are many responses, from joining in with all the decorations
and festivities, to pulling the blinds, turning out the lights and hiding in
the basement. Here’s another option
from Redeeming Halloween, Celebrating Without Selling Out, by Kim Wier
& Pam McCune: use Halloween
night to let Christ’s light shine.
If you have children:
-Talk with them about All Saint’s Day, and martyrs.
-Read the “Pumpkin Gospel” or “The Pumpkin Patch
Parable” together.
-Talk about the people who do not know Jesus and what a
“treat” God wants them to
have: eternal life.
-After coming
home and seeing the abundance of candy, finish the night with a Scripture
verse
that promises sweet rewards for those
who do God’s work in earth. “It
will be good for that
servant whom the master finds doing
[good things] when he returns” Luke 12:43.
If you are handing out treats:
-Include a Christian symbol among your decorations; Christmas, fish,
electric candles in windows, rope lights in the shape of a cross;
-Use a wreath or decoration with a scripture: Fear not, I am
with you; Perfect love casts out fear; Christ has indeed risen from
the dead; or harvest verses like John4:35, Matt 9:37 or Luke 10:2.
-Attach a scripture to your treats (The office has some ready
for you.)
-As you prepare, pray for the children who will come.
-Tell the children how glad you are they came.
-If parents
accompany the children, introduce yourself and ask where they live.
Our Tailgate Trick or Treating will be a great
opportunity to
“let our light
shine.” See details elsewhere in this newsletter.
