Mission Statement

As faithful members of the Presbyterian Church of Garden City, Kansas, we accept God’s call to be involved in the ministry of God’s church.

Our mission is a twofold responsibility; to nurture and support our local church; and to follow Christ’s call to serve in the world, thereby proclaiming

the Gospel to all.

    Interim Pastor Search

Our revised and expanded Church Information Form has been completed and approved by the Session.  It will now be sent back to the Presbytery Committee on Ministry for their approval after which it can be posted on the web site.  There it can be read by interim pastors looking for a position.  We will also be able to refer interested people to that sight to learn more about our church.  In the meantime, Charles Ayers is contacting some people who could possibly be interested in the job.

Ordained Elders

The Worship Committee is seeking ordained elders interested in being trained to administer Communion. This would involve 4-5 hours of training on Saturday, October 6. The time has not been set, but the training would take place here in Garden City. The names of those elders would then be forwarded to Presbytery for their November meeting. The ability of these elders to administer the elements would end when an interim or regular pastor is named. If you are an ordained elder and interested, please contact Anne Hamlett or Rod Buchele.

Looking forward to Oct. 31

Plan on participating in Tailgate Trick or Treating in our church parking lot!

Looking forward to Advent

Do you enjoy our self-published Advent Devotion booklet?  The C.E. Committee needs your help in making it happen!  We are seeking individuals to write the daily devotions.  Watch for the list of readings and the sign up sheet in the Atrium.

Looking forward to Christmas

Our crowns for the three kings/wise men have been well used, but they have seen their last days.  It’s time to make new ones!  Anyone interested in this small craft project?  Please contact Mary.

Adult Opportunities continue…

Jon Ansley is leading “Invitation to the Old Testament” at 9:30

Sunday’s in the Parlor.

Dear Mission-Loving Presbyterians,

We are pleased to invite you to dinner and a discussion with Pastor Ramon Garcia and his wife Ruth at 6:00 pm on Sunday, October 7 at First Presbyterian Church of Wichita (525 North Broadway).

Rev. Garcia is a pastor of Berith Presbyterian in Chihuahua, Mexico and the General Presbyter of the Presbytery of Northern Mexico.  As you are probably aware, our Presbytery has approved a budget for and set the establishing a partnership relationship with this Presbytery as one of our goals for the new year.  Pastor Ramon will make a PowerPoint presentation on the work of his Presbytery and will begin the dialogue of what shape a relationship might take.

First Presbyterian Church will be serving a nice meal (chicken, salad, desert) at a cost of $5.00 per person.  Please contact Presbytery office at 800-503-9424 or local 946-9481 to RSVP by Wednesday, October 3.  If you have any questions you may contact Bill O’Connell at 316-321-3790.

October – A Month to Celebrate 150 Years of Presbyterian Mission

Be in touch with our missionaries:  Nearly all PC(USA) missionaries have home pages on the Mission Connections site

(pcusa.org/missionsconnections). On each home page, you can read the archive of their newsletters and send them greetings via the link to their email.  The Mission Yearbook also tells of the work our missions are doing for Christ’s Kingdom, domestically and internationally.

Pray for our missionaries:  It’s crucial that missionaries feel that the church is interested in their ministry and interested in the people the missionary has been sent to serve. How will they know that their stories are being heard unless you tell them? Missionaries often have prayer requests. Honor those requests, and then let the missionary know you’ve done so.

Parish Nurse Notes

From September 15-20 I was able to volunteer at camp for young adults with head

injuries sponsored by Faith Mountain Church in Red River, New Mexico. Although I went to minister to them, I think the campers did more ministering to me. It was a very rewarding and humbling experience. I believe the love for God and the servant attitude of all of the volunteers made it a better camp than it would have been if the workers were paid with money. These young adults taught and reinforced some important life lessons. One of the young men told me he was very thankful he was in a coma for 5 ½ months because he doesn’t know if he could have endured the physical pain from his injuries. He also told me he was involved in illegal drug use before his accident and he is very thankful because without the accident he would probably still be using drugs.

I believe all of us are disabled and gifted in different areas. I saw that many of these campers are very gifted in the area of wit. Some of the things they would say were so funny or insightful. I saw that some of the campers had a faith and trust in God more like a child. I also learned it is important to be thankful for whatever God gives us in life and I was humbled. I plan to pray that God will continue to humble me. I believe when God humbles a person God takes him off the pedestal and puts us at the perfect level to minister to a person much like the way Christ ministered to people in his day. I am thankful

our church knows how to treat and has a true ministry to those with mental and physical disabilities.

I would like to list out some resources for people with brain injuries and others related medical problems. If anyone would like contact information or written information please contact me or leave me a note in the parish nurse office.

     Ear Foundation (for balance disorders & dizziness); Blindness and vision impairment;

Brain Injury Association of America; Coma Recovery Association; United Cerebral Palsy Association. I am also familiar with state resources in Kansas for disabilities and advocacy.

Shirley Spangler has invited our congregation to a free program with Joyce Hett, social worker from St. Catherine Hospital, as the speaker.  Shirley and I attended parish nurse training together and hope to work together to bring programs such as these to the community.  The program will address living wills and durable power of attorney.
