Mission Statement

As faithful members of the Presbyterian Church of Garden City, Kansas, we accept God’s call to be involved in the ministry of God’s church.

Our mission is a twofold responsibility; to nurture and support our local church; and to follow Christ’s call to serve in the world, thereby proclaiming the Gospel to all.

TUMBLEWEED WORSHIP

Sunday, August 26th will be our annual Tumbleweed Worship at Lee Richardson Zoo. Worship Service will begin at 9:30 am.

Presbytery August 28, 2007

Grace Presbyterian Church - Wichita

During the Presbytery meeting on August 28 at the Grace Presbyterian Church in Wichita, the Presbytery will be officially recognizing Dave’s retirement.

It will begin at approximately 3:15 pm, it would be advised to arrive between 2:30 - 3:00 pm if you would like to only attend this part of the meeting.  Regular meeting will begin @ 9:00 am.

Thank You from Sweleys

This is long past due, but we want to take this opportunity to thank the congregation for the wonderful way in which you planned and hosted our retirement celebration. It couldn’t have been done in a more wonderful way. The food was super and we want to thank all who provided food, helped in the kitchen and in serving. The planning was very creative and we felt very honored. The honorary title bestowed upon Dave is much appreciated, the laptop computer will be enjoyed for many years, and the response from both community and church family was overwhelming. We do thank you for including the community on this celebration. It has truly been a privilege to serve this church for the past 18 years. We fell blessed to be part of the Presbyterian family here in Garden City. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!

                                                                                                                                                    Dave and Cheryl

Donations for Dave's retirement gift, a laptop computer, were generous enough to cover the cost with a remainder of approximately  $750.00 going to the Sweleys. Your contributions were appreciated.

Progress Update on New Pastor

In the past few weeks three prospective candidates for Interim Pastor have declined to be considered for the position with our church.  Other inquiries have also been fruitless.  As a result, the committee has been forced to take the more formal (and lengthier) route which requires that we first complete a Church Information Form (CIF), a task that we hoped to bypass until we begin searching for a permanent pastor.  Our committee is gathering information and writing required statements for the CIF and hopes to distribute copies of this draft to the Session this week.  If possible we will poll the Session to obtain their approval of the CIF so that we do not have to wait for a special session meeting on September 9.  The next step is obtaining approval of the Presbytery Committee on Ministry after which the form can be placed on the PCUSA web site to formally post our Interim Pastor position.

After the CIF is completed we also plan to contact about 15 pastors from across the country who have identified themselves on another web site as available for interim positions.  Because these men and women are not from our area or Presbytery and they know nothing about our church we felt that the CIF needed to be completed to help us

introduce ourselves to them.

We are just as anxious as all of you to have an Interim Pastor as soon as possible, and we are disappointed that we could not hire somebody quickly and easily.  We will continue to do our best with the constraints we have.

Interim Pastor Search Committee

(Joy Anstaett, Ann Hamlett, Matt Jones, Kathryn Ochampaugh)

The Mission Study Committee met at the Church on Monday, August 13th to edit and

approve a Survey provided to us by Don Owens at the Presbytery in Wichita. We made some changes to the survey and sent it back to Don for his approval and incorporation into the finished Survey. After approval by the Session, it will be mailed to the congregation members to complete and return to the Committee. This survey will provide the Session and the Pastoral Search Committee with a cross section of thoughts and information as to not only the personality and characteristics the members of the congregation would hope to see in a new pastor, but also the direction and mission of the Church for the next five to ten years and beyond. The Committee urges you to complete and return this survey after you have received it, so that your expectations will be known.

**SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT**

We are pleased to announce that Kevin Ochampaugh will be our new,

permanent Choir Director and Director of Music.  He has been filling in in that

position for the summer and it has worked out so well for all concerned that he has agreed to continue.

We are so fortunate that we didn’t have to look far to find the right person for the job.

A new or very recent model laptop computer is needed for several purposes:

to keep the church’s web site up to date, burn DVDs of videos of church events, print music, organize the choir’s music and schedule, and other applications.

If you think that you might have an answer to this need contact Kevin Ochampaugh.

Presbyterian Women - Fall Gathering

Thursday, September 27, 2007 we will be host to the fall gathering of

Presbyterian Women of Southern Kansas (Western Section) .

This is a one day meeting with registration beginning at 8:30 am and concluding at approximately 2:30 pm. There will be workshops in the morning and afternoon. The morning workshops will be “Leadership Training” and “New Mission Ideas”. The afternoon workshops will be an overview of the ‘Horizons Bible Study, Above and Beyond: Hearing God’s Call in Jonah and Ruth’. These workshops will be presented by personnel from Presbytery.

The women from this church will be responsible for the morning coffee during registration, workers at the registration table, either an organist or a pianist, and a babysitter. We will also need to provide and serve a light lunch at noon for all the women attending.

In order to have the day run as smoothly as possible, we will need volunteers for all the above mentioned tasks. If you are willing to help in any way please let us know by calling the church office at

275-9141 or Adah Jenkins at 275-4842.

Nursery

The church nursery only has one attendant during Sunday worship because the number of children has been very low. The personnel committee is compiling a list of people who would be willing to help Alma in the event that she needs an extra set of hands unexpectedly. The plan is for the ushers to quietly contact a volunteer who could go to the nursery for the rest of the service. If you are willing to be on the list of volunteers, please contact the office or a member of the personnel committee, Carol Deaver, Ann Hamlett, Adah Jenkins, Audrey Law, Randy McVey.  We also welcome your input about the nursery and how it is

functioning.

Call Kathryn Ochampaugh if you have ideas about updating the toys and equipment in the nursery.

You are invited to a farewell party for Judy Ackley.

Tuesday, September 4 at 6:30 pm in the church fellowship hall.

Bring a side dish and help send her off.

From The Christian Education Committee

Question (for Adults & Youth):

Why get up early and go to Sunday School?

Why bother about Youth Group?

Answer: from Proverbs 2:1-8 (The Message)

1-5  Good friend, take to heart what I'm telling you;

collect my counsels and guard them with your life.
       Tune your ears to the world of Wisdom;
set your heart on a life of Understanding.
That's right - if you make Insight your priority,
and won't take no for an answer,
Searching for it like a prospector panning for gold,
like an adventurer on a treasure hunt,

Believe me, before you know it Fear-of-God will be yours;
you'll have come upon the Knowledge of God.

6-8 And here's why: God gives out Wisdom free,
is plainspoken in Knowledge and Understanding.
He's a rich mine of Common Sense for those who live well,
a personal bodyguard to the candid and sincere.
He keeps his eye on all who live honestly,
and pays special attention to his loyally committed ones.

Prayer Journals

High school graduates in Ladue (MO) Chapel Presbyterian Church

Different progression

When Covenant Presbyterian Church, Wichita, was in need of additional volunteers, the Evangelism and Stewardship committee of the church hosted an in-house progressive dinner. Courses were served in various parts of the building, with explanations of volunteer opportunities in each area.
