As faithful members of the Presbyterian
Church of Garden City,
Our mission is a twofold responsibility; to
nurture and support our local church; and to follow Christ’s call to serve in
the world, thereby proclaiming the Gospel to all.
From the Session
Congregational
Meeting
On June 5, 2007 Session
received a letter from Dave stating that due to health reasons he would be
separating from his duties as our Pastor.
Session has set July 15, 2007
as the date of a Special Congregational Meeting. Members are encouraged to
attend this very important meeting to discuss and vote to dissolve Dave’s
Pastoral Call. It is one of the steps
that must be taken to move forward in finding a new pastor.
Please
mark your calendars and plan to attend.
Retirement Reception
We would like to invite everyone to come and join us for a
‘come and go’ reception in
honor of Dave’s retirement.
The reception will be held on July
22, 2007 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
Parish Nurse
During the last three years,
Brenda Watson has been serving as an associate Parish Nurse for our church. We
are please to announce that she will be assuming the responsibilities for this
position.
We thank Brenda
for her willingness to continue this ministry.
Parish
Nursing Notes
I want to start
by saying what an honor it has been to serve under Marilyn Petersen as a parish
nurse over the past 3 years. Marilyn truly understood the mission and the
functions of parish nursing. Although she traveled often, she was always
available to advise me over the telephone. She’s my role model in parish
nursing and she has left a great impact on the entire congregation. I would
like to share the verse she felt was the most applicable to parish nursing. I Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know
your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit…. therefore glorify God in your body
and in your spirit which are God’s.”
Last week I had
the joy of visiting the VBS groups. When Mary shared the theme of the Bible
school I was so excited to help, but worried about fitting the time in on my
lunch break. The projects fit in so well with KU Medical Center’s mission to
promote interest in science; I was encouraged to do this as part of my job. The
two topics I spoke about are SO crucial to healthy living.
On Wednesday the
session focused on hand washing. The children were very surprised to learn I
was taught how to wash my hands when I was 20 years old in nursing school.
After we learned about and practiced washing our hands the children applied
glow lotion and looked at the spots they missed under a black light. They
looked at the growth of cultures of their hands and water sources taken on
Monday In Bible school we linked hand
washing to what families and churches can do as a mission project including
sending soap, hand sanitizer, or teaching people how to wash their hands .
Since I am a nurse I am frequently asked what people can do to protect
themselves when there is an outbreak of illness. I can never stress enough the
importance of hand hygiene. It seems people are looking for something more
sophisticated, but nothing can substitute for this.
On Friday we
talked about the importance of clean water. I explained that nurses and doctors
can come into undeveloped countries and provide healthcare and medications to
heal people of diseases, but if the people drink dirty water again (for example
stagnant water in puddles) they will just get sick again. I gave the analogy that “the kidneys are the
washing machine of the blood.” As
adults we also need to think about what would happen if we didn’t put much
water in the washing machine or used dirty water and relate that to our bodies.
The children carried either 1 or 2 gallon jugs around the outside of the church
to see what it would be like to have to carry water daily in undeveloped
countries. Finally we discussed possible mission projects such as sending $50
for a simple water family size water filter, sending several thousand dollars
to purchase a community filter system or actually helping install a filter
system.
In conclusion,
since your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit remember to wash your hands and
drink plenty of clean water.
