Mission Statement

As faithful members of the Presbyterian Church of Garden City, Kansas, we accept God’s call to be involved in the ministry of God’s church.

Our mission is a twofold responsibility; to nurture and support our local church; and to follow Christ’s call to serve in the world, thereby proclaiming the Gospel to all.

On the Mend

We are happy to say that Dave is now out of the hospital. He is recovering slowly and will continue to do occupational and physical therapy on an outpatient basis.

Summer Sunday School – for all generations!

Mission is bearing witness to God’s love for the world in Jesus Christ.  It is the grateful and enthusiastic

response to God’s grace.  This summer we will look at how our church tells the Good News and welcomes people in God’s name.

Come and see what Presbyterian Mission looks like in

Florida, California, Alaska, Kentucky, Illinois, Greensburg KS, and the world.

THE OPPORTUNITY OF NEIGHBORHOODS

Your Outreach and Evangelism Committee recently discussed ways in which we could be more successful and effective in our outreach efforts in the community.  After all, one of the hallmarks of being a Presbyterian is that quality of involvement in our community.

To that end, the committee has discussed revamping the brochure that explains the important particulars about the Garden City Presbyterian Church, and the subject of this article, Neighborhood Outreach Opportunities.  This community of Garden City is poised to significantly grow in the next few years, with that growth comes new people to our community.  People from all parts of the country, people of all races, shapes and sizes, and most importantly people of all faiths – even Presbyterians.

Our community, like many in the mid-west, has a certain profile requiring new people move to the community to accommodate growth.  This is due to several factors including a very low unemployment rate, a gap in our labor force meeting certain skill levels, and in the impending Baby-boomer retirees.  I am confident that this growth will occur because there are several companies which have either announced, or will announce in the very near future, plans to locate or expand in the community.  As we are successful in attracting a majority of these companies, we will develop an opportunity for several hundred new jobs.  And then of course there is the Sunflower Project with its 1300 to 1500 jobs which will begin to impact the community next year.  All these new people present an opportunity for the congregation of the Presbyterian Church to outreach to new neighbors.

While I took a long time getting to the point of this article, it is simply this: as you notice new people moving to the neighborhood it may be nice to extend the neighborly welcome for which Garden City is famous.  You may even want to take advantage of Audrey Law’s cookies as an icebreaker, although I am sure most of you may have particular and special icebreakers of your own.  Along with the revamped brochure material about our church and our congregation, this “Welcome to the Neighborhood” is something we all should, but too rarely, do.  The committee asks that you keep our church in mind when you have the opportunity to be that neighbor.

Join us on May 27, 2007, as we celebrate the Day of Pentecost and receive the Pentecost Offering. On this day we join with Christians around the world to

celebrate God’s gift of the Holy Spirit to the church. We also receive the Pentecost Offering, which benefits children at risk, youth and young adult.

The Tarwater family will be leaving for New Jersey at the end of June.  We will be holding a reception in their honor on June 17 after worship. We plan to do a ‘money map’ (similar to a money tree) in appreciation for the years that they have served our church. We want to send them on their way with beginnings of a trip fund for the travels that they love so much. If you are unable to attend that day but still want to contribute please

contact Ann Hamlett or send donations to the church office, please indicate

Tarwater fund.

Mission Study

We will soon be appointing a committee for our ‘mission study’ which is the first requirement in the process of searching for a new pastor and the only one that can be done before Dave retires.  If you would like to be a part of this mission study please contact the church office for further information.

The Session hopes to appoint a committee on June 4th.

Meals on Wheels

Thank you to all the volunteers that have signed up to deliver Meals on Wheels. We still have a couple of open days left to fill.
