Pastor’s Prose
Yesterday was only the third Sunday in January
and we have already cancelled church twice. I am guessing ‘07 will go down in
our memories as one of those years of the great storms. I have been in this
church for seventeen and one-half (17 1/2) years and we have only called off
church three (3) times. I would say
that that is remarkable weather taking
in consideration of where we live.
A blizzard is a pretty dynamic
happening. I realize that we have been praying for moisture for at least five
(5) years and this was the most perfect
kind of snow. It was easy coming, there was no wind to speak of, it will
provide wonderful ground cover for our wheat and it will stay on our fallow
ground. So we couldn’t of asked for a better kind of storm.
Laws of science give us some insights
into our storm, for every action (snow storm) there is always and equal and
opposite reaction. So for the poor of our community this represents a great
deal of inconvenience and for some suffering. For those with inadequate windows
and insulation they are cold. For those with sub-standard roofs they are going
to have a myriad of leaks . For those that shop day by day, there will be
inadequate food. For the cattle feeders it will take substantially more feed to
maintain their feeding operations. For those that live in the country their
roads will be hard to navigate and some will be without power. For those that work for the City, the County
and the State they will spend many
hours plowing our roads to make them safe for us. So when a storm like this
hits many are inconvenienced and some
are even thrown into an untenable situation.
‘Lo and behold. So what is a church to
do? As I said earlier, we have been praying for months for something like this
to happen and when it does it creates significant problems for us. When something
like this occurs on a Saturday, it’s almost impossible to get prepared for
church on Sunday. For us we had to cancel the afternoon portion of our church
officer retreat for fear that all our people might not be able to get home. UBC
(
When we cancel church the people are not
fed spiritually. Children and adults are left untaught. We postponed the
Baptism of Annalise York and were unable to hold a needed special congregational
meeting. The needs of maintaining the family values and the family fellowship
of our people is left un-served. Our stewardship obligations are left
unaddressed. It sounds terrible but
it’s really not. Here we are Monday morning our doors are now open. Phil
Sloderbeck came yesterday and cleared our sidewalks. We are ready for business
as usual. We’re safe. We’re warm. As far as we know, no one from our
congregation is in a crisis because of the snow. So we know God is good. ~

funds and hope to raise $1,000. to send to the Crane Presbyterian Church

News from Christian Education….
We’re sad: One of our
Pre-School teachers has moved away. We
will
miss the Tom & Carty York family. This opens up a teaching
position with out of this world benefits!
The new teacher would be working with a great partner (Ann Hamlet) in
teaching this fun pre-school class. If
you haven’t seen the “Pre-school Three Kings” check out the bulletin board by
the office.
They are precious! **
The “Jesus Film” was shown January 3 & 4 to six young people, including two not
from our church. Thanks to the Memorial
Committee for this DVD. If anyone
