Light
of the world, you who bear the dawn to us: We recall today how
terrible
is the darkness you were born to overcome. We confess to you our fear
of
death and destruction, the violence we allow, and the suffering we inflict
upon
others. We confess to you our ingrained prejudices, our failure to be
merciful,
and tragedies too often of our own making. We confess to you how
desperately
we need you. By your presence, Lord, save us. By your steadfast
love,
light our way.
*Declaration of Pardon
Leader: Friends, hear the Good News! Jesus Christ has become like us in every way, so that he might serve as our high priest before God, expiating our sins.
People:
Jesus Christ has become our merciful and faithful high priest before God, sacrificing himself for
our sins.
Leader: Friends, believe the Good News!
People:
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
Leader: Meet whatever tests face you now, knowing that Jesus is able to help
us, having passed through the test of suffering.

THE SERVICE DURING FELLOWSHIP TIME
Today is the official gathering
of the Christmas Joy Offering. This is one of the four official offerings of
the Presbyterian Church. The money from this offering is used to supplement the
incomes of missionaries and ministers who have spent their lives serving
congregations of less than 100 people. The recipients of this offering served
churches who did not have the funds to fully support the pension of those individuals. The other half of the offering
is used to compensate the ethnic colleges that our church supports. This truly
is an offering of Good News!
Interim Pastor News!
The Interim Search Committee and the
Session hosted
Pastor James O.
Pitts III (prefers to be called Jim) on a visit to Garden City last
weekend. Jim met the church staff, toured the church building, watched
the children practice their Christmas program and ate pizza with them, attended
a reception with the Session, met with the committee twice, joined us
at worship and was interviewed by the presbytery's Committee on Ministry.
We are very pleased to announce to the
congregation that Jim has agreed to begin work as our Interim Pastor on January
1st. As soon as possible he will move from Zanesville, Ohio where he
completed his last interim position a few months ago. He is
from Mobile, Alabama.
Jim is looking forward to joining us and
was very complementary about our church, facilities, programs, staff and
leadership. He enjoys teaching so we can anticipate some adult education
opportunities as well as his preaching and leadership in other areas.

Holy
God, Righteous Judge, have mercy upon us. We have been proud in the thoughts of our hearts; you would be right
to scatter us. We have grasped at worldly
power; you could surely choose to bring us down. We have allowed the rich to prosper and the poor to wither away.
Have
mercy on us, Lord! Remind us of your grace in ages past. Humble us, that we may find our strength in you.
Kindle in us love for all you love, that we may
join you in your work of mercy, redemption, and joy.
*Declaration of Pardon
Leader:
Friends, hear the Good News! God’s mercy is sure from generation to
generation
and firm in the promise to our ancestors.
People:
God will not forget to show mercy to their children’s children.
Leader: Friends, believe the Good News!
People:
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
Leader: Be always joyful. Pray continually. Give
thanks whatever happens, for this
is what God in Christ wills for you.

We Have Heard on High" (All Sing)
Shepherds,
why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains
prolong?
Say what may the tidings
be, Which inspire your heav'nly song?
Glo - - - ria in excelsis
Deo! Glo - - - ria in excelsis Deo!
Come to Bethlehem and see,
Him whose birth the angels sing.
Com, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the new born King.
Glo - - - ria in excelsis
Deo! Glo - - - ria in excelsis Deo!
"Joy to
the World" (Vs. 4, All Sing)
He
Rules the World with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove
The
glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love,
and wonders of His love, and wonders, wonders
of; His; love.
"O Come,
All Ye Faithful" (All Sing)
Yea,
Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning.
Jesus,
to Thee be all glory giv'n:
Word
of the Father, now in flesh appearing.
O
come, let us adore Him. O come, let us
adore Him.
O
come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!
"Silent
Night" (All Sing)
Silent
night, holy night; Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories
stream from heaven afar; Heav'nly hosts sing alleluia.
Christ,
the Savior, is born. Christ, the
Savior, is born.
Silent
night, holy night; Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant
beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus,
Lord, at Thy birth; Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.
"O Holy
Night" (All Sing)
Truly
He taught us to love one another;
His law is love and His
gospel is peace.
Chains
shall He break, for the slave is our brother;
And in His name all
oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in
grateful chorus raise
We let all within us praise
His holy name
Christ is the Lord; Oh,
praise His name for ever!
His pow'r and glory
evermore proclaim.
His pow'r and glory. Ever more Proclaim. . .
Choir and piano will finish the
selection from here. Thank you for
singing with us!!

Christmas Joy Offering
Presbyterians have embraced an
Advent season offering since the 1930s, when funds collected were distributed
among formers ministers, missionaries, church workers and their families to
supplement inadequate incomes. It has been know as the Christmas Joy Offering
since 1989. In 1991 the 203rd General Assembly changed the distribution of
funds to 50% for the Board of Pensions and 50% for racial ethnic education in
Presbyterian schools and colleges. Today tit is one of four special offerings
collected churchwide to give congregations direct ways to support specific
causes that help those in need. It will be received this year on Dec. 23.

Sovereign
God, so often we know not what we are doing. We are so absorbed in our concerns
that we are unaware of who is being hurt by the works of our hands or the
desires of our hearts. We fail to see how connected we are, how our actions
affect so many, how the web of creation links us all together. So often we do
not realize that what we are doing is sinful, contrary to your purposes and
obstructing you gracious intents.
Have mercy on us. Open our
eyes so that we can see who we are and what we have done. Cleanse our hearts so
we can be who you call us to be and do what you would have us do, for the sake
of Jesus Christ, who rules over all. Amen

of Pardon
Leader: Friends, hear the Good News! God has chosen
to reconcile the whole world.
People:
By making peace through the blood shed by Jesus Christ on the cross.
Leader: Friends, believe the Good News!

In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

God almighty. Your ways are
just and true. With people of faith from all ties and places, we lift our hearts in joyful praise.
Minister: God of Love, God of Life, we thank you for
sending your son Jesus, … we will celebrate victory with him.
People: Remembering the Lord Jesus, we break bread
and share one cup, announcing his death for the sins of the
world, and telling his resurrection to all peoples and nations.
Minister: Great God, give your holy spirit in the

First Presbyterian Church of Newton, KS is
excited to be hosting a concert by the internationally
acclaimed African Children’s Choir at the church
on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. The African Children’s Choir is
comprised of 26 children from Kenya and Uganda, ages 6-12. Many of the children
in the choir have lost one or both parents to extreme poverty or to AIDS. The
choir delivers a powerful blend of singing, dancing, and storytelling to bridge
cultural differences and spread hope and joy to audiences throughout the world.
The First Presbyterian Church of Newton feels
blessed to share this experience with you and they ask that you please pass
along the details of this upcoming concert to your congregation. Many in your
church may already know about the choir and won’t want to miss an opportunity
to attend. There is no admission to the concert. A free-will offering will be
taken to support the choir’s efforts back in Africa.

The Call to Worship
Leader: Surely God is our
salvation; we will trust, and not be afraid.
People: For the Lord
is our stronghold and defense, and has become our Savior.
Leader: Sing praises, for the Lord has
done great things; let this be known in all the
earth.
People: We will
shout and sing for joy. For great in our midst is the Holy One.

*The Response "Cares Chorus" Choir and Congregational Echo
*Worship in Confession (unison)
Holy
God, You are light and truth. We confess that we often dwell in
darkness
and falsehood. Sin drives us into ourselves and away from you. We
almost
come to believe that it is possible for us to make it on our own. But in the moments we are honest, we see our errors of
our ways.
Turn
us around. Capture our hearts. Cleanse our spirits. In your light, may we see who we are. In your truth, may we
see who we can become, as we seek to
follow Jesus Christ. Amen
*Declaration of Pardon
Leader:
Friends, hear the Good News! Surely God is your salvation.
People:
We will trust and not be afraid.
Leader:
Friends, believe the Good News!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
Leader: Stand
firm in the faith. Do not be misled by false prophets of doom. Do not
panic when the news is bad. By standing firm you will win true life for
yourselves.
