The Call to Worship
Leader: As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for
you, O God.
People: My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall
I come and
behold the face of God?
Leader: Why are you cast
down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within
me?
People: Put your hope
in God, for I shall again praise the One who is my
help and my God.

Hand” No. 262

Response “Christ We do
All Adore You”

*Worship in Confession (unison)
O God, many are the sins that
torment us, holding us captive and restricting
the life you intend:
bitterness and jealousy, resentment and envy, selfishness and
pride, self-loathing
and contempt, and more that we cannot even name. What
have you to do with us
and our sinful ways?
Have you really come to release us?
Is forgiveness really possible? Is the news
really that good? We
hope it is so. Lord, make it so. Wash us with your mercy.
Seal us in your love.
We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen
*Declaration
of Pardon
Leader: Friends,
hear the Good News! Through faith you are all children of God
in union with Christ Jesus.
People: Baptized into union with him, we have all put on Christ as a
garment.
Leader: Friends,
believe the Good News!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
Leader: Leave self behind. Day after day, take up your cross and follow
Christ.
Only in that risk are you ultimately safe.

Leader: Give ear to our words, O Lord; give heed to our sighing.
People: Listen to the
sound of our cry, our Sovereign and our God, for to
you we pray.
Leader: You are not a God who delights in wickedness, and evil will not
accompany you.
People: But we, through the abundance of your mercy, will enter your
house; we will bow down toward your holy
temple in awe of you.

Not only is it more than we deserve, it is
more than we can imagine. Again and again

without boundary, and mercy without exception.
Forgive us for making you too
small, for thinking that you are only our God,
for
believing that we have you all figured out. Expand our vision and enlarge our
hearts, that we might grow in love and thanksgiving, and more nearly follow
Jesus our Savior. Amen

Dave’s Decision
The Session received a letter from Dave dated June 4 in which he announced that he intends to go on disability as of June 30. The requirement for this option is the inability to work for 90 days and his last day on the job was March 26. His disability coverage is through the denomination’s pension plan and he will be paid approximately 60% of his current salary. As of July 1 our church will not be paying him a salary.
The Session affirmed Dave’s decision with regret and with prayers for his continued recovery. We have not, however, ended our relationship with him. That won’t happen until he retires or requests dissolution of the relationship which would need to be ratified by the congregation at a congregational meeting and then by Presbytery. The earliest date that can take place is August. The church could then seek to hire an interim pastor.
It continues to be necessary for the Session to do a lot research to discover the options available to us and Charles Ayers, who is moderating our Session in Dave’s absence, and Don Owens, the Presbytery Executive, have been very helpful. The Session doesn’t know all the answers but we want the congregation to feel free to ask and we will do our best to communicate what we think we know.
Ann Hamlett, Clerk of Session
In other action at the Session meeting, a committee was appointed to begin the mission study of our church, a first and necessary step toward eventually calling a new pastor. After the committee list was compiled and calls were made to those people, this group will lead the study:
Anne Brown, Mary Buchele, Lauren Deaver, Wally Hamann, Carol Hodgkinson, Steve Irvin, Brad Irvin (part-time participant), Jennifer Jones, Bob Law
The rest of the congregation will also have opportunities to contribute to the study. Don Owens will be helping the committee to organize their efforts. Thank you to all of those who volunteered and to those who said yes when they were asked to help.
We will be holding a reception in honor of
Suzan, Mark and Brian Tarwater on June 17 after worship. The family will be leaving for New Jersey at the
end of June. We plan to do a ‘money
map’ (similar to a money tree) in appreciation for the years that they have
served our church.
If you are unable to attend that day but still want to contribute please contact Ann Hamlett or send donations to the church office, please indicate Tarwater fund.

Sixteen new
church-related projects announced
More than $1.1 million in grants will support new churches, transformation and community outreach
by Mary Julia Pace Associate for Communication PC (USA) Office of Communication
LOUISVILLE — The Mission Development Resources Committee (MDRC) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) recently awarded more than $1.1 million in grant money to 16 church-related projects across the United States.
The short-term start-up funds will enable congregations, presbyteries and synods to organize new churches, transform existing congregations or develop church-based community outreach programs.
“The population is growing in many parts of the country,” said MDRC chair Melvin Khachigian of Bakersfield, CA. “In other regions the population is changing. That’s why 65 percent of all new grants are allocated to racial-ethnic projects. These grants provide presbyteries with the seed money to develop new churches or new strategies for existing congregations.”
Recipients were chosen during a MDRC meeting May 2-4 in Minneapolis.
With this latest round of mission program grants, the PC (USA)’s General Assembly Council (GAC) is now funding 203 new and ongoing projects across 104 presbyteries in 15 synods.
“Each of the new projects is a story about Presbyterians responding to God’s call,” said the Rev. Eric Hoey, director of the GAC’s new Evangelism and Church Growth program area. “Listening to them talk about their mission and their vision for the future was very inspiring.”
The MDRC reports to the GAC. Its primary focus is to respond to the church growth commitment of the denomination, work that it conducts in partnership with synods and presbyteries engaged in church growth mission through the allocation of grants and loans.
Hoey, attending his first MDRC meeting since being named to the new national staff position in February, said the church has to be “dynamic” and “when the GAC, presbyteries and synods collaborate on these types of evangelism projects, we are sharing the gospel in ways that meet the needs of a diverse and changing culture.”
Each of the following new projects illustrates one of three mission goals of the grants:
New church development
In Denver, the Iglesia Presbiteriana De Valverde New Church Development project is establishing a new congregation in the southwest corner of the city that will share worship space with Valverde Community Church, a declining congregation that’s more than 100 years old. The project received a $90,000 grant that will be matched with funds from the Synod of the Rocky Mountains and Denver Presbytery.
Church transformation
In Paramus, NJ, the Trinity Multicultural Congregational Transformation project is adding a Chinese-speaking ministry to provide Reformed spiritual nourishment to this growing, yet underserved, Chinese population. The project received a $100,000 grant that will be matched with funds from the Synod of the Northeast and Palisades Presbytery.
Community ministry
Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Santa Ana, CA, is establishing the Samaritan Care Center to provide its members and the community with resources, educational programs and counseling to meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Prelude
The Welcome and Concerns of the Church
The Introit “Shine, Jesus, Shine” Chancel Choir
Worship in Adoration and Praise
The Call to Worship
Leader: O Lord, our Lord, how exalted is your name in all the world!
People: Out of the mouths of infants and children your majesty is praised
above the heavens.
Leader: When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and
the stars you have set in their courses.
People: What are we human beings that you should be mindful of us - mere
mortals that you
should seek us out?
Leader: Yet, you have made us but a little lower than the angels; you adorn us
with glory and honor.
People: O Lord, our Lord, how
exalted is your name in all the world!
*The Hymn of Praise “Come, Great God of All the Ages” No. 132
*The Invocation
*The Response “Christ, We Do All Adore You” Chancel Choir
*Worship in Confession (unison)
Blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit, Our Creator, our Redeemer, and our Sustainer, yours is a perfect
relationship. One God in three persons, mutual and whole. We confess that our
relationships are not that way. We have been too selfish. Or we have given too
much. Or we have accepted too little.
We have failed to love after the manner of
Jesus. We have let sin drive us away from one another and from you. We long for
wholeness and peace and a sense of well-being, but our sin takes us in other
directions. Forgive us and restore us. Pull us to you, with mercy and grace,
pull us to you.
*Declaration
of Pardon
Leader: Friends, hear the Good News! We have been justified through faith in Jesus Christ.
People: We have been received into the sphere of God’s grace.
Leader: Friends, believe the Good News!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
Leader: Let us continue at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ and
share with others the love with which the Holy Spirit floods our hearts.

The Time for God's Children
*The Hymn of Meditation “Take Time To Be Holy”
Take time to be holy; speak oft with
thy lord;
Abide in him always,
and feed on his word;
Make friends of
God’s children; help those who are weak,
Forgetting in
nothing his blessing to seek.
Take time to be holy; the world rushes on.
Spend much time in
secret with Jesus alone;
By looking to Jesus
like him thou shalt be;
Thy friends in thy
conduct His likeness shall see.
Take time to be
holy; let Him be thy guide,
And run not before
Him, whatever betide;
In joy or in sorrow,
still follow thy Lord,
And looking to Jesus, still trust in His word
Take time to be
holy; be calm in thy soul,
Each thought and
each motive beneath his control;
Thus led by his
spirit to fountains of love,
Thou soon shall be
fitted for service above.

Move within our fellowship, transform now our living!
Come, O Spirit, fill Your church, making strong our mission;
Fill Your daughters and Your sons, with a mighty vision,
Till the great and glorious day, when the whole creation,
Sings Your praises as Lord and King, giver of salvation!

God of fire and wind, holy and powerful, mighty and mysterious, we

word. We have rejected your gifts. We have failed in your work. Ignoring the
truth of Pentecost, we continue to exclude those who are different from us. We

*Worship in Confession (unison)
Awesome and disturbing God, you breathed life into us and each day fill us with the power of your spirit. We are filled with your courage and yet act with caution and timidity. We know your intentions for justice, yet keep silent too often or yield to the complexity of issues and do nothing. We are overwhelmed with your love, yet harbor old resentments, hold on to past hurts and turn away from reconciliation. Wondrous God, restore us to clear thinking, give us compassionate hearts, and lead us to bold actions. Let your forgiving love cleanse fear and timidity from us. Set us on your path with your wind at our backs. Amen.
*Affirmation of Faith (unison)
The Lord who loves us all has called us together to worship with joyous praise. We proclaim with radiant faces what God has done for us by sending His only Son Jesus, who loved us enough to suffer and die so that we might be free. Sharing in His overwhelming love and calling on His power, in obedience, we grow closer to Him every day, “finding ourselves” in the process. We are excited to think that He is always with us - in life, in death, in life beyond death! So we humbly and gratefully glorify His holy name. Our trust is in Him. Amen

Water, wind can’t stop their faith
May
has been hard on Kansas. A tornado wiped out an entire town May 4, and
hundreds
of smaller tornados in just one weekend equaled the usual annual number of
storms. And after the wind came water. A band stretching north to south
diagonally across the center of the state brought days of downpours, including
a 24-hour period when over 11 inches fell. No sooner than the storms cleared,
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance sent One Great Hour of Sharing funds to help
with recovery.
The
strength of the storm, an EF5 said to be the strongest to hit in the United
States since 1999, and the extreme width of its path combined to make the
recovery more difficult than usual. In most cases, the damage path is narrow
and there are surrounding buildings from which to assist those affected. In
this case, it’s neighboring communities in which assistance is happening. One
local emergency official described the situation as “the most significant emergency
the state of Kansas has faced in a long, long time.”
Ecumenical support
There
are no Presbyterian Churches within Greensburg, which is about 100 miles
west
of Wichita. PDA is supporting ecumenical, interfaith, and community disaster
response efforts as well as supporting the presbytery response through
Presbyterian churches in neighboring communities. Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance National Response Team (PDA-NRT) members Don Hampton and Bob Houser
connected with the Presbytery of Southern Kansas office in Wichita, then
proceeded over to the affected area, connecting with pastors in the region.
On Sunday morning just over a week after the tornado, religious leaders from across West Central Kansas gathered in Greensburg to lead a non-denominational church service in a huge tent because all of Greensburg’s churches were destroyed. An overflow crowd filled all the chairs in the tent. Those who didn’t get a seat stood in the back. Many speakers citied verses from the bible and talked about the power of faith in troubled times. Several talked about the loss of homes and material possessions, and how that pales in comparison to being alive among friends and family.
Widespread flooding
Communities
across the Presbytery of Northern Kansas have suffered greatly
from
the rains that caused many lakes, rivers and streams to exceed their banks and
caused major flooding in some areas. The Presbytery of Northern Kansas
continues
to try to assess damage throughout its boundaries. Gail Farnham and
the
Rev. Bruce Wismer, members of the PDA National Response Team, are
assisting
the presbytery in the response.
The
small community of Wakarusa, Kansas, sustained severe damage as the
Wakarusa
River completely flooded out the entire town and emergency rescues were
necessary to evacuate the residents. Associate General Presbyter for the
Presbytery
of Northern Kansas, Melanie Crawford, visited the Wakarusa
Presbyterian
Church the day after flood waters receded and has begun working with
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to help this congregation as they try to
recover
and as they try to help the community recover.
The
church basement is completely full of water, and around 8 inches of water
flooded the entire first floor of the
church, ruining carpet throughout the
sanctuary
and fellowship hall, ruining the tile in the kitchen and leaving behind
mud-coated floors. Water leaked into the refrigerator and all the cabinets.
Choir robes are being cleaned to see if they can be salvaged.
But,
in all this devastation, the members of this small congregation in this small
community
are pulling together and are still very concerned for and keeping the people of
Greensburg, Kansas, in their prayers.
The
presbytery is currently trying to establish the amount of damage to and the
response
needed for the Central Presbyterian Church in Topeka. The roof
received
significant damage and water problems in the basement are significant.
Other
communities affected are Frankfort, Junction City, Minneapolis, Oakhill,
Oskaloosa,
Rossville, Phillipsburg, Wamego and Washington.
To contribute to U.S. disasters such as these, send funds to Presbyterian
Disaster
Assistance, DR000015, in care of the synod receiving agency, 6400
Glenwood, Suite 111, Overland Park KS 66202
News from presbyteries
Dr. Edward J. Thompson will begin work June 1 as general presbyter and
stated clerk in the Presbytery of Northern Kansas. He comes from the Presbytery
of West Virginia, where he served halftime as pastor of the McKinnon
Presbyterian Church in Charleston and half time as special presbyter for
Quadrant Four Ministries.
He is a graduate of the College of William and Mary and Union
Theological
Seminary in Richmond VA. His wife Jackie is
a graduate of the Presbyterian School
of Christian Education and has worked in early childhood education. They have
one daughter, Katie, who just graduated from Kenyon College, Gambier OH.
Soup for sharing
Children’s church school classes at First Presbyterian Church in
Columbia MO made jars of dried soup mix as part of their lessons on the feeding
of the 5,000. Each jar contained 10 different kinds of beans, a bag of mixed
spices, and a recipe for making the soup. They sold the jars of “souper soup”
for $5, with proceeds given to One Great Hour of Sharing to help fight hunger.
afghans for Afghans
Across town at Trinity Presbyterian Church, knitters and crocheters have
the
opportunity to help afghans for Afghans, a
humanitarian, educational people-to-people project that sends handcrafted
blankets, sweaters, vests, hats, mittens and socks to the people of
Afghanistan. A neighborhood knitting circle meets weekly and encourages all
newcomers.
This grassroots effort is inspired by Red Cross volunteers who made
afghans, socks, slippers, and other items for soldiers and refugees during
World Wars I and II and other times of crisis and need. To read more about the
project, go to www.afghansforafghans.org.
Logical logo
The youth of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Wichita are using a tricycle
as their logo. Pastor Geoff Snook offered several reasons why the symbol was
chosen: “It is one vehicle with three
wheels, which reminds us that we worship one God with three persons - the
trinity, and we worship at Trinity Presbyterian Church,” he said. “Everyone can
relate to a tricycle. It is a vehicle that is pedaled by children and it
reminds us that we are always growing in our relationship with Christ. It is
designed to be “going, which reminds of us of the final art of our mission statement, ‘going into the
community to show God’s love in word and deed.’”

Almighty
God, Jesus came to bring peace, giving not as the world gives, but
in
a way that stills our hearts and calms our fears. Yet we struggle to receive
what
he
offers. Peace in our world, in our homes, in ourselves frequently eludes us.
Sin
fosters hatred and hostility, envy and strife, self-loathing and
self-pity.
Release from these burdens. Cleanse us and
open us to the peace of Christ, the
peaces that passes understanding. Amen
*Declaration of
Pardon
Leader: Friends, hear the Good News! Jesus says: Set your troubled heart at rest, and banish your fears.
People: Peace is Christ’s gift to us.
Leader: Friends, believe he Good News!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
Leader: Heed the word God speaks through the living Word, Jesus. Heed the
word the Spirit teaches, calling to your mind the teaching of Jesus. In this
way show your love for God despite those who do not heed what Jesus
says.

Additionally, Kurt was named as the State of Kansas LULAC Man of the Year at the LULAC State Convention. Congratulations Kurt for the recognition of the hard work you are doing to support Hispanic Students in pursuit if higher education!
Thank You
We would like to thank everyone who turned out to help with our ‘Spring’ work day. We were able to fertilize the lawns thanks to the donation of fertilizer from Wharton’s. Trees and hedges were trimmed and minor maintenance was able to be done. There never seems to be an end to a general work day, however we did get a lot done. Thank you again.
Greensburg
Update
From Don Owens - General Presbyter.
Wednesday, May 09, 2007
Dear Friends,
The pictures in the paper and on television do not begin to show the amount of devastation of Greensburg. Two members of the national Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Response Team and I accompanied Angela Madden from the Pratt Church to Greensburg yesterday. We spent the day talking to people and hearing their stories. We will be coordinating our response with other church bodies. In the meantime we have received $10,000 from PDA as a first response. We have also set up an account in the Presbytery to receive other monies from people and churches. The greatest need for people for work teams and money for uncovered expenses will begin in a few weeks when early responders have left the community. We will continue to keep you informed. Thanks for your help.

Pentecost Offering
The Pentecost Offering supports mission with children at risk, youth and young adults. This year’s Offering theme, “That very Spirit!” from Romans 8:16, highlights how the Spirit of God persistently reminds us that we are all children of God. Your gifts to the Pentecost Offering work actively to bring God’s blessings to our brothers and sisters in need.

Pentecost
Offering
Pentecost is an amazing, life-giving day in the community of faith. At Pentecost, we
celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to transform human life and all creation. Through
our participation in the Pentecost Offering, we will be helping to bring a transforming love of God to children at risk, youth and young adults.
This year’s theme, “That very Spirit” is from Romans 8:16. The passage describes the Spirit of God’s persistent proclamation to us that we are God’s children. With that assurance, we can know that God’s love and care for us know no bounds.
The Pentecost Offering is a tangible way to demonstrate that Spirit with in us! It gives us the opportunity to use 40 percent of the amount received to minister in our own community on behalf of children at risk. Through the General Assembly ministries, the Pentecost Offering also makes an astonishing impact as it guides and nurtures the faith of Presbyterian young people, calls forth a new generation of church leadership and advocates for children at risk on a national level. Pentecost Sunday, May 27th.
