Call to Worship Lay Leader
The
people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.
For a child has
been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he
is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be
endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice
and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore.
The zeal of the
Lord of hosts will do this. Jesus Christ is our life and light. In his name and in his power, let us worship
God!

Prayer of Adoration Lay Leader
Let’s pray…God of glory, your splendor shines from a manger in Bethlehem into the darkness of human night. Open our eyes to Christ’s presence in the shadows of our world so that we, like him, may become beacons of your justice and defenders of all for whom there is no room. Amen.

Confession of Sin: (unison) Denise
Holy God, you sent a star to guide the
Magi to the child Jesus. We confess
that we have not followed the light of your Word. We have not searched for signs of your love in the world or
trusted your good news to be good. We
have failed to praise your Son’s birth and refused his peace on earth. We have expected little and hoped for less.. Forgive
our doubt and renew in us all fine desires, that we may watch and wait and once
more hear the glad story of our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Lord. Through Christ, our Lord we bring our
personal confessions to you now in silence … (silent prayer). Amen.
Declaration of Pardon Denise
Pastor: The
Lord’s grace is sure. God has looked
with favor upon his people and has redeemed them. God has raised up a mighty savior from the house of David. God spoke through the prophets of old so
that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. God has shown mercy and has remembered his
promises.
People: Hallelujah!
Amen!
*Gloria Patri “Glory Be to the Father” No. 579
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.
*Passing of Christ’s Peace Denise
Pastor: Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
People: And also with you. (Please
greet those around you with a gesture of peace.)
THE WORD
Children’s Time Pat Sanders Mary Buchele
(Children up to 6th grade are invited forward
to share this special time.)
The First Lesson Isaiah 11:1-5, The Prophecy of Christ’s Peace
A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a
branch shall grow out of his roots. The
spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the
Lord. His delight shall be in the fear
of the Lord. He shall not judge by what
his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall
judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall
strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he
shall kill the wicked. Righteousness
shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins.
The Carol Lo, How A Rose E’er Blooming No. 48
Lo, how a
rose e'er blooming, from tender stem hath sprung,
Of Jesse's
lineage coming, by faithful prophets sung.
It came a
floweret bright, amid the cold of winter, when half spent was the night.
Isaiah 'twas
foretold it, the rose I have in mind,
With Mary we
behold it, the virgin mother kind.
To show God's
love aright she bore for us a Savior, when half spent was the night.
Second Lesson: Luke 1:26-38, The Angel Gabriel Salutes Mary
In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God
to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name
was Joseph, of the house of David. The
virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to
her and said, “Greetings, favored one! The
Lord is with you.” But she was much
perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,
Mary, for you have found favor with God.
And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will
name him Jesus. He will be great, and
will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the
throne of his ancestor David. He will
reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be,
since I am a virgin?” The angel said to
her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called
Son of God. And now, your relative
Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month
for her who was said to be barren. For
nothing will be impossible with God.” Then
Mary said, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to
your word.” Then the angel departed
from her.
The Carol Angels From the Realms of Glory No. 22
Angels, from
the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye, who sang creation's
story Now proclaim Messiah's birth:
REFRAIN: Come and worship, come and worship, worship
Christ, the newborn King!
All creation,
join in praising God the Father, Spirit, Son,
Evermore your
voices raising to the eternal Three in One:
Third Lesson: Matthew 1:18-23, The Story of Jesus’ Birth
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this
way. When his mother Mary had been
engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with
child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband
Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace,
planned to dismiss her quietly. But
just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your
wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him
Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord
through the prophet: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they
shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”

Fourth Lesson: Luke 2:8-16, The Shepherds Go to the Manger
In that region there were shepherds living in the
fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the
Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am
bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day
in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a
child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a
multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the
highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” When the angels had left them and gone into
heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see
this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and
Joseph, and the child lying in the manger.
The Carol Angels We Have Heard on High No. 23
Angels we
have heard on high, sweetly singing o'er the plains, and the mountains in reply
echoing their
joyous strains.
REFRAIN: Gloria in excelsis Deo; gloria in excelsis
Deo.
Shepherds,
why this jubilee? Why your joyous
strains prolong? What the gladsome
tidings be which inspire your heavenly song?
Come to
Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing; vome, adore on bended knee Christ,
the Lord, the newborn King.
Fifth Lesson: Matthew 2:1-11, Wise Men Are Led by the Star to Jesus
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in
Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is
the child who has been born king of the Jews?
For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was
frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief
priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to
be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem
of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in
the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from
you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’” Then Herod secretly called for the wise men
and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go
and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word
so that I may also go and pay him homage.”
When they had heard the king, they set out; and there,
ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped
over the place where the child was. When
they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child
with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they
offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
The Carol The First Nowell No. 56
The first
Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in
fields where they lay a-keeping their sheep, on a cold winter's night that was
so deep.
REFRAIN: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the
King of Israel.
They looked
up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, and to the earth it gave
great light, and so it continued both day and night.
Then entered
in those wise men three, fell reverently upon their knee, and offered there in
His presence, their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.
Sixth Lesson: John 1:1-14, The Mystery of the Incarnation
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. He was in
the beginning with God. All things came
into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life,
and the life was the light of all people.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

Narrator (Scripture 1):
Luke 2:1-5
1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3And everyone went to his own town to register. 4So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
Narration: So, here we have a woman pregnant with a
child. No Prenatal visits, no books or
birth classes. On top of it they have
to go to Bethlehem. How would you
feel? I felt. . . when I was
pregnant. And I even had books,
classes, and family support. Take all
this into account, then, step outside your door with all the conditions that
come with pregnancy and walk to the Colorado boarder. Or, walk to Jetmore. Men
how would you like to be responsible for making that trip? (Music Begins) What was in their hearts at
this time? What did they cling to for
hope?
Choir Ministry/Drama: “Be Still”

cots in the kitchen. Still fine

very lucky to be together here and I will make sure your money is well spent. Let us calm our nerves by meditating in

last verse to meet with the manager of the Inn about a place to stay. )
Narration: Upon arrival
in Bethlehem they went to find shelter and a place for Mary.
Unfortunately, all was full
and nothing could be done. (Pause for acting out) But, in seeing the need a
warm dry place was made under the roof of the stable. (Denise, Mary, & Joseph act out narration. Then Mary is taken in front of the S. pews
to sit on the floor with Joseph caring for her out of sight of the
congregation. She then changes from
pregnant to already given birth.)
(Joseph position manger in front)
Narration
(Scripture 2):
Luke 2 says:
6While they were there, the time came for the
baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She
wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for
them in the inn.

Narrator (Scripture 3): The Shepherds and the Angels
(People dressed as shepherds act out this reading. Start by herding sheep from back to the middle of sanctuary with some narration)
Narration (from Lecturn)
8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them,
Angel: (From Pulpit) "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ[a] the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Narrator: 13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
Choir:
14"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to
men on whom his favor rests."
Narrator/Drama: And the
shepherds were afraid, how would you feel.
Bright light, voice from above?
This is a message I would take seriously. So they spread the word and gathered to celebrate the newborn
king. (Shepherds come up the isle proclaiming the birth to those in the pews
and head to be at the manger. Younger
children dressed as animals also gather near the manger when the music begins)

Lord Jesus Christ, you came to
serve. As you came to a blind man and
gave him sight, come to us in our darkness and show us the things we cannot see. As you came to a man tormented in his mind
and gave him peace and healing, come to us in our tensions and make us
whole. As you came to Lazarus, who was
dead, and brought him from the grave, come to us in our deadness and bring us
to real life now with our living Lord. Lord Jesus Christ, you came not to be served but to serve. But we see life the other way round: to get where we do not give, to exploit whom we have not helped, to use what we
have not earned. As you came to a dying
thief and promised him paradise, come to us now in forgiveness and give us
hope. In your name, Lord, we pray. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon Denise
Pastor: In the life, death, and resurrection of

Confession of Sin (Unison) Kurt
Awesome and
compassionate God, you have loved us with unfailing, self-giving mercy, but we
have not loved you. You constantly call
us, but we do not listen. You ask us to
love, but we walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped in our own
concerns. We condone evil, prejudice,
warfare, and greed. God of grace, as
you come to us in mercy, we repent in spirit and in truth, admit our sin, and gratefully
receive your forgiveness through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer. Hear us now as we continue our confession in
silence … (silent prayer.) Amen.
Declaration of Pardon Denise
Pastor: While
it is true that we have sinned, it is a greater truth that we are forgiven
through God’s love in Jesus Christ. To
all who humbly seek the mercy of God I say, in Jesus Christ your sin is
forgiven.
People: Thanks be to God.

The stewardship committee will meet on November 6
to discuss revisions of the by-laws and the building use policy and on November
15 to discuss the 2011budget.
·

Confession
and Pardon
Confession
of Sin (Unison) Lay
Leader
Dear God,
we offer ourselves to you, aware that our sins are many. Sometimes we go too
fast. Sometimes we sit too still. We worry about the wrong things and neglect
what is important. We struggle to find the right balance. Forgive us. Restore
us. Help us to find the right measures of worship and service, of self-care and
self-giving, of faith and hope and love, as we seek to follow the example of
Jesus Christ. Hear us now as we continue our confession in silence … (silent prayer). Amen.
Declaration of Pardon Denise
No matter how
slow we may be to respond when Christ calls, God is the patient guide, always
ready for us when we return and say “Yes.” Even if we can only give a feeble
“Yes,” Christ is ready to take that and build upon it the foundation of a
wonderful life. When we say “Yes” to Christ, we will be amazed at what is
possible. Amen.

Welcome and
Concerns of the Church Rev. Denise Pass
Introit “Lord, I Believe in You” Chancel Choir
Call to Worship Denise
Pastor:
All who thirst, come to the water.
Come, all who are weary; come, all
who yearn for forgiveness. The Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ has
washed over us, and our gracious and holy God
beckons and blesses us.
Drink deeply of these living waters.
People: Glory to you, O Lord, glory
to you.

as Partners in Christ’s Service” No. 343

Confession and Pardon
Confession of Sin (Unison) Denise
Which
is easier, Lord – to heal or to forgive?
You went all the way to the
cross
to forgive my sin and set me free.
Forgive me, Lord, when I take your
forgiveness
lightly. Forgive me where I struggle or
refuse to forgive –
incarcerating
myself and others in the prison of guilt.
Forgive us our sins as we
forgive
those who sin against us. (silent
prayer) In the name of Jesus Christ,
amen.
Declaration of Pardon Denise
Pastor: In the life, death, and resurrection of
Jesus, we are assured that there is
no sin so terrible that God cannot forgive, no hurt so terrible
that God
cannot
heal. God accepts, God forgives, and
God sets free.
People: Thanks be to God. Amen.
*Gloria
Patri “Glory
Be to the Father” No. 579
*Passing of Christ’s Peace Denise
As God has given
us peace through Christ,
so let us pass the peace
of Christ to each other.
(Please greet those
around you with a gesture of peace.)
THE WORD
Prayer
for Illumination (Unison)
Denise
Father
in heaven, help us to take you at your Word.
Touch us with the Holy Spirit,
and do not let us get away from your Word without being caught by
its promises and powerful joy. We
pray this for our sake, Father, and for
those whom we love, in the name of Jesus.
Amen.

and then pass along for someone else. You might give it to a friend, neighbor, co-worker or leave behind at your doctor's office.
Why not include an invitation to attend worship with you as you give your copy away?
