Our Worship

Christmas
Eve
December 24, 2006
7:00 PM
The progressive
lighting of the candles in the Advent wreath is a cherished part of our
congregational heritage. In order to build on that tradition, we have created a
series of readings which illuminated the advent theme of journeying. After all,
the Advent/Christmas/Epiphany cycle evokes Mary and Joseph’s trip to Bethlehem
and flight to Egypt, the travels of the wise men, and Christ’s journey in the
incarnation. The readings are designed to educate the congregation about the
geography and history of the ancient world. By focusing on a different locale
each week, we are able to review our own spiritual journey in the light of
biblical times and places. The way to Bethlehem is challenging and joyful. We
are pleased to be sharing the journey together.

Tonight is the official gathering of the Christmas Joy
Offering. This is one of the four official offerings of the Presbyterian
Church. The money from this offering is used to supplement the incomes of
missionaries and ministers who have spent their lives serving congregations of
less than 100 people. The recipients of this offering served churches who did
not have the funds to fully support the pension of those
individuals. The other half of the offering is used to compensate the ethnic colleges that our church supports. This truly is an offering of Good News!

What Is the Christmas Joy Offering?
A
Presbyterian tradition for almost seventy years, the Christmas Joy Offering is
one of the four special offerings designated by the General Assembly of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to provide congregations direct ways of supporting
specific causes that help those in need.
The
receipts from the Offering are distributed equally to the Board of Pensions for
assistance programs in housing for missionaries and pastors of smaller churches
and to National Ministries of the General Assembly Council to support
Presbyterian racial ethnic education through the scholarship programs.
History of the Christmas Joy Offering
Presbyterians have long celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ by giving
generously to an Advent offering. The Christmas Joy Offering dates back to the
1930s when the former Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS) began an
offering to supplement inadequate
retirement income and provide supplement medical insurance for former
ministers, missionaries, church workers, and their families. It was first
officially called the Joy Gift in 1949.
In
the former United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (UPCUSA),
a Christmas offering was first taken in 1960. Called the White Gift, its funds
were used for general mission and world relief. In 1964 the name was changed to
the Christmas Offering, and receipts provided support for health and welfare
concerns related to children. The emphasis on global work with children
continued until 1973, when the offering was used to assist former servants of
the church who were living on inadequate pensions. In 1974 racial ethnic
education was added, and in 1979 nursing home care assistance was also
included. Funds were distributed evenly between the Board of Pensions and
racial ethnic education.
In 1988 the PCUS and the UPCUSA offerings were joined into one offering, the Christmas Offering Joy Gift. It was agreed that neither the Board of Pensions nor the racial ethnic schools would suffer in the merger of the Joy Gift and the Christmas Offering. In 1989 the offering was renamed the Christmas Joy Offering, and in 1991 the 203rd General Assembly changed the distribution of funds to 50 percent to the Board of Pensions and 50 percent to the Presbyterian racial ethnic schools and colleges.
Christmas Baskets
The
Emmaus House is still in need of cake mixes and instant

cash
donation, Christmas boxes will be handed
out on

from 1:00 ’til 6:00 pm.
Children’s Christmas Program
What a great performance our children presented Wednesday! “The First Leon” was about a boy who improvises in a Christmas play, and gives up his room for Baby Jesus. Great story and costumes, great music and lines - if you missed it, or just want to see it again, we’ll be showing it in the fellowship hall after worship. Thanks to everyone involved.

Cleansing God. We hear the call to repentance, but we struggle to respond. A voice tells us to turn around, but we prefer our own ways. You seek to purify us in the furnace of your love, but we constantly elude your searching hand. Our sin leads us in other directions, away from you, away from life. Look with mercy on us. Clear a place within us so that something new might be born, something that will return us to the way you have shown us in Jesus Christ. Amen

Theprogressive lighting of the candles in the Advent wreath is a cherished part ofour congregational heritage. In order to build on that tradition, we havecreated a series of readings which illuminated the advent theme of journeying. After all, the Advent/Christmas/Epiphany cycle evokes Mary and Joseph’s trip toBethlehemand flight toEgypt, the travels of the wise men, and Christ’s journey in the incarnation. Thereadings are designed to educate the congregation about the geography andhistory of the ancient world. By focusing on a different locale each week, weare able to review our own spiritual journey in the light of biblical times andplaces. The way toBethlehemis challenging and joyful. We arepleased to be sharing the journey together.

The Call toAdvent
Leader: Behold, I am sending mypromise upon you; believe, and be clothed with power from onhigh.
People: Your spirit is rushing upon us with power;
yourbreath is filling this house with heaven.
Leader: My promise is sent to you and your children -to all who stand far away from me!
People: Your tongues of fire rest upon all flesh!
Makeus see visions, and let us dream dreams; help us
takeheart, and prophesy!
The Advent Scripture Jeremiah33:14-16 Pg. 699
The Lighting
Jeremiah brings us the word for the first Sunday of Advent, our seasonof preparing for Christmas. What was the
word Jeremiah brought? (Wait to see if anyone remembers, “Hope.”) Yes, “Hope.”Jeremiah was a prophet some called the ‘weeping’ prophet because of hissadness at people’s sin. Yet Jeremiah never lost hope because he knew God could be trusted to keep the promise made toIsrael, the promise of a Messiah. Even though he lived long before Jesus was born and he never saw God’s promise fulfilled, Jeremiah held on to hope.
As Christians we have hope, too. We look forward to Christmas knowingthat hope was born inBethlehem. Jesus is Emmanuel – that means God-With-Us. No matter what life brings to us, we haveChrist’s loving presence with us always. We also have hopebecause we believe Jesus when he promised to return one day. One day there willbe a new heaven and a new earth and all of God’s people will livein peace. That is a wonderful hope to hold on to, isn’tit?
How long can we hold on to hope? Would a hundred years seem like a longtime? How about a 1,000 years?
The song we aregoing to sing today has been around for nearly 1,000 years! Christians have beensinging “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” during Advent all this time. We’ve beensinging it for so long that no one even knows who made up the first Latin words,or who wrote the beautiful music. However, everyone recognizes the song as aprayer of hope – hope that, as we preparefor Christmas, our hearts will again receive the promised Messiah, Jesus our Savior. “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” isalso a prayer of hope that one day Jesus will return and fulfill God’s plan forpeople on earth. Our job is to live in hope, like Jeremiah, and to sing withChristians throughout the ages, “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” – Come into ourhearts at Christmas. As we light the first candle, we celebrate the flame ofhope! God is with us, now and forever.
*The Song of First Sunday “O Come, O ComeEmmanuel" No. 9
The Advent Prayer
God without beginning and withoutend, your promise comes to us, bringing hope. May we in turn come toyour
mountain, bending our swords and spears, seeking instruction, and walking inyour light; in the name of Jesus the Christ,
the light of the world. Amen.
*The Choral Response “Blessed Savior, Come to Me” ChancelChoir
*Worship inConfession (unison)
Loving and merciful God, you create
each of us in yourimage. You grace us generously with the gifts of the Spirit.
You equip us all, women and men, youth and children, for a life of ministry. Yet
we tarnish yourimage, waste our gifts, refuse to accept your call to service,
and fail to livein peace with our neighbors. Have mercy on us and forgive us.
Fill us with yourSpirit and strengthen us to continue the journey. We trust
that through you allthings are possible. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Risen
Lord, we pray.Amen
*Declaration ofPardon
Leader: Friends, hear the good news! God will forgiveour iniquity and remember our sin no more

Compassionate
God, we need the renewal of your forgiving grace. We fail to live simply in
dependence upon you. We try to provide for ourselves, as if there were
blessings apart from you. We clutch our possessions in anxiety, as if they, not
you, give us value. We seek human recognition and honor rather than humbling
ourselves to serve your glory. Though you give us all we need, we resist giving
to others.
Free
us, O God, from our sins and the selfishness which ensnares us. Touch our
hearts again with your gracious love in Jesus Christ, who though he was rich
became poor for our sakes, that through his poverty we might become rich.

to bear the sins of many will
appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are
eagerly
waiting for him. Encourage one

Stewardship
Each one should give as you have decided in your heart to give. You
should not be sad when you give, and you should not give because you feel
forced to give. God loves the person who gives happily. II Corinthians 9:7
I remember as a child of my father
serving on the Stewardship Committee of our Methodist Church in Iowa. Each year
on ‘Stewardship Sunday’, several men would meet at the church to receive their
‘dreaded’ list of the members of the congregation who had neither pledged nor
given to the church. They were to call on these members and ask them to give to
the church. Needless to say, many were not giving “happily”.
I don’t foresee Doug Heatwole asking the
members of our committee to come ‘visiting’ your house anytime in our
lifetimes, but it does not diminish the fact that God does want us to give. At
this time of need in our, Presbyterian Church, we of the Stewardship Committee
ask that you give “happily” toward God’s work. We on the committee are doing
our best to hold down expenses with the help of all those who need funds to
continue God’s work. Please, help us to keep our finances on solid footing.

Great
shirts -
The O & E committee is taking orders for shirts with Garden
City Presbyterian Church embroidered around the Presbyterian emblem. The long-sleeved shirts are 100% cotton
in a small blue check. Available in men’s or tailored women’s at a
cost of $26. This
is not a fund-raiser. Some of us
need a way to start a conversation about something besides the weather – this
could be an opening to talk about your church.
They would also be great to wear at events where we go as a group. Sample shirt, details and order form will
be in the church office. We hope to be able to place our order by
November 29th allowing the delivery being before Christmas.

God of love, forgive us, for you call us to love you totally, but we serve you only partially. We are
half-hearted in our devotion, unwilling to commit ourselves fully to you, unable to keep our promises to you.
We fail to love others as ourselves; we do not love you as you deserve. We stand apart from others and from
you.
Redeem us, God of grace. Renew
your Spirit’s power within us. Teach us to love as Jesus loved, humbling
ourselves before your majesty and opening ourselves to the needs of
others, to glorify your holy name.
*Worship
in Affirmation (Litany)
Leader: Friends,
hear the good news! God has chosen you to be saved through sanctification
by the Spirit.
People: We are saved by the Spirit through belief in
the truth in Christ.
Leader: Friends,
believe the good news!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
Leader: To
this he called you through the gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of
our Lord Jesus Christ.

Stewardship
As I reflect on my faith journey and think
back to some of my earliest memories of church, one memory that often comes to
mind is of the offering that my parents made sure I had in my pocket as we
headed off to church. I was very fortunate to be raised in a family that is
very involved in the church. One aspect of that involvement and commitment to
the church and its mission is their strong beliefs in stewardship. It’s the
type of stewardship that is more than what you put in the offering plate on
Sunday, the type of stewardship that involves a commitment of time, talent, and
money. An understanding of stewardship
that is always growing
and maturing as they go through life with all of its struggles.
They made sure that my brothers and I
started learning early in life some of the first important aspects of
stewardship. Our offering was not an extra coin or two from dad’s pocket but
10% of the allowance that we had earned that week. It may have been only a
nickel or a dime but it was our nickel or dime and it was important for us to
take that offering to church each Sunday.I am thankful for the parents that I
have been blessed with and those early lessons learned about stewardship. I
realize however that there are many things that I still don’t fully understand.
I will continue to struggle with my response to the many aspects
of stewardship. I do believe that an important part of the
growing in faith process is an increase commitment to stewardship.

Butter Braids for the Bus
Our Youth
Group will be selling Butter Braids during the month of November, with delivery
December 19 or 20. There are six
flavors, plus caramel rolls to choose from, and all cost $9.00 each.
Butter Braid
is a frozen pastry dough. When baked,
it tastes just like a homemade breakfast entrée or dessert!
And it’s easy to do
– let it rise
overnight or 8-12 hours, and bake 20-25 minutes to make a delicious pastry.
The bus isn’t
in need of major repairs, but we do have expenses for general maintenance. See one of our youth to place an order.
