CANTATA "Times of Prayer"

Introduction                                                                                                 Narrator

Prayer happens at all different times and places and is offered for many different reasons.  Prayer is always the place to turn to focus our lives. (Music Immediately begins)

"Be Thou My Vision"                                                                                Choir and Brass

We Pray for Forgiveness:                                                                        Narrator

Will the children please come down now.

Prayer should be taught to and practiced by our children.  It is a time to slow down our fast food lives, ask for forgiveness and share our love.

Childrens Time:                                                                                            Pat Sanders

Today we are going to talk about prayer.  How many of you have prayed before.  Good, I'm glad.  When do we pray?  Before bed?  At dinner?  During church services?  When we are confused or sad?  Maybe even when we are happy.  I want each of you to think of something in your life that you would like to pray to god about and then step up and say it into this microphone.

(Kids offer up personal prayers about their lives/days/concerns.)

God listens to prayers of adults and children.  That makes your prayers just as important as anyone's.  Why don't we stand and start the next song for the choir and then I will let you go sit back down with your family again.

"Lord Listen to Your Children Praying"                                              Choir, Children, Brass, & Congregation

We Pray for Thanks: (Family gathers at table in front)

We now take a look at an average family at dinner time.                     Narrator

Family                                                                                                                        The Ochampaugh's

Who wants to say the prayer tonight?  Jacob.  "Let's say the Johnny Appleseed prayer" (Jacob says and family sings prayer wildly)

Kathryn says:  "I am glad you enjoyed singing the prayer, but we want to make sure we are taking what we are doing seriously.  What are we truly thankful for?  We can't let our prayers here or in church become routine or mechanical.  They need to come from our hearts.  So when we are singing or saying our prayer at dinner lets be sure to remember what God has provided and truly thank Him.

"Lift Up Your Voice"                                                                                  Choir and Brass

We Pray in Remembrance:                                                                      Narrator

Prayer is a special way to offer remembrance to those we love and support.

September 11                                                                                               Kaylene Daugaard

"From a Distance"                                                                                     Choir

We Pray for Strength:                                                                               Narrator

Prayer gives us strength and courage in difficult times.  Let us look in on a soldier writing a letter to home.

Sergeant:                                                                                                       Kevin Ochampaugh

Let be ready to move out in five.  Five minute we roll!!

Letter to Mom/Home:                                                                                   Alison Oppenheimer

Mom I'm scared.  Things are so confusing over here.  I haven't had much sleep, I am not sure what is going to happen.  I'm so tired and miss you.  I get overwhelmed at times and then a feeling comes over me like a warm blanket or in my case a cool fan.  I remember what my family, church and community has taught me.  My faith in God kicks into overdrive and suddenly I have strength again.  I am not so tired and I think of Jesus.  The odds so against him, I am sure he wanted to give up at times, but the poor, weak, and downtrodden had no one.  Someone has to believe in them and help.  Jesus believed in all of us even though we probably didn't deserve it much of the time.  He fought for us and gave his life on the cross for his belief in humanity.  (Music Begins)   I don't know what will happen, but I believe in god and in humanity.  I love you all.

Sergeant:

Let's move out people.  Let's move!!!

"No Greater Love"                                                                                     Choir

Congregational Prayer of Hope:                                                            Narrator

Each Sunday we offer up prayers during church.  As was said during the prayer of thanks,  we need to strive not to coldly and mechanically go through the paces, but to let the words wash over us like cool water.  Please join me now in a congregational prayer.

Unison Congregational Prayer

Prayers of the People                                                                               Denise

Thy Word                                                                                                     Choir

Closing                                                                                                         Narrator

We have seen, heard, and participated in different prayers from different situations and generations.  Each effected by our level of innocence and worldliness.  What do you want from God.  What do you need from God.  He answers all prayers you know.  And as expected, I will finish the quote by saying that sometimes his answer to these prayers is no.  Everything happens for a reason.  Just step back for a moment and look for the signs and explanations all around you if you don't understand the answer to your prayer.  One day we will all understand fully and along with that understanding will be rejoicing with voices and instruments I am sure.

L       In your wisdom, O God, you call us here to worship you.

P       We gather, alive to the Word of God.

L       You call us to be fully alive with your life abundant, ready to listen and respond with heart, soul, strength, and mind.

P       We listen, alive to the Word of God.

L       You call us to be always watchful for your Word of wisdom, sometimes startling and unexpected, sometimes still and quiet, but always dwelling among us.

P       We watch and wait for the Word of God.

Prayer of Confession                                                                                                           Anne

L      Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.

P       Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

L       For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

P       Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment.

L       You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.

P       Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.

L       Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.

P       Do not cast me from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me.

Assurance of Pardon                                                                                                         Denise

L       Christ is our peace; those who are divided he has made one.  He has broken down the barriers of separation by his death and has built us up into one body, with God.  To all who repent and believe he has promised reconciliation.  So live as people reconciled. Amen.

P       Thanks be to God.

L       The earth is the LORD’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it;

P       for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.

P       Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.

Prayer of Confession: (unison)                                                                                           Steven

U       Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against you.  You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love.  Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease you.  Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light and walk in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior.   Hear us now as we continue our confession in silence … (silent prayer).  Amen.

Assurance of Pardon                                                                                                         Denise

L       Take comfort in the assurance that even those things that are hidden from memory, or are too deep for our words, are not beyond God’s forgiving love.  God, who knows us completely, bestows pardon and peace.

P       Thanks be to God.
